Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary and the Storm

Back in her modest two-bedroom apartment in Queens, the contrast to the Waldorf-Astoria could not have been starker.

The peeling wallpaper in the hallway and the hum of the old refrigerator felt like a safe haven compared to the viper's nest of Manhattan. Clara knelt by the sofa, gently applying a warm, damp cloth to Mia’s bruised cheek.

"Does it still hurt, baby?" Clara asked, her voice cracking with suppressed tears.

Mia shook her head, her big eyes heavy with exhaustion. "Mommy, why did that mean lady hit me? Did I do something wrong?"

"No, sweetheart. You did nothing wrong. That woman is just very, very miserable, and she tried to hurt us because she’s weak," Clara said, kissing Mia’s forehead until the little girl finally drifted off to sleep.

Once Mia was tucked safely into bed, Clara walked over to her small wooden desk. She opened her laptop. The screen cast a harsh blue glow across her tired face.

She opened an encrypted folder labeled Sterling Files.

Inside were medical records, DNA comparisons, and confidential correspondence from thirty years ago—proof that Julian Sterling, the man who had discarded her and left her penniless, was not the biological son of the late patriarch Arthur Sterling. Eleanor had swapped babies at a private Swiss clinic to secure her inheritance decades ago. Clara had stumbled upon the files by accident during her marriage, hidden deep inside a private safe she was told never to touch.

Her phone buzzed violently on the desk.

An unknown number. Then another text message flashed across the screen:

“Name your price, Clara. Name your price and disappear.”

Clara stared at the screen, a dark, fierce smile curving her lips. Disappear? No. They had only just begun to play.
