Chapter 4 - The Midnight Visitor

At 2:00 AM, a heavy knock echoed through Clara’s apartment hallway.
Clara didn’t flinch. She had been expecting it. She walked quietly to the door, peering through the peephole.
Standing in the dim, flickering hallway light was Julian Sterling—her ex-husband. He looked disheveled, his bespoke tuxedo jacket unbuttoned, his tie pulled loose, and his hair wildly out of place. Gone was the arrogant, untouchable corporate titan who used to sneer at her background. Tonight, he looked like a cornered animal.
Clara unlocked the door and pulled it open just a fraction, keeping the chain lock fastened.
"What do you want, Julian?" Clara asked coldly.
"Clara, open the damn door," Julian hissed, his voice frantic as he glanced down the empty hallway. "You’ve gone insane. What did you say to my mother? She’s currently sedated in Mount Sinai Hospital, and the board of Sterling Enterprises is calling emergency meetings because the stock is already dropping in pre-market Asian trading!"
"Is it?" Clara raised an eyebrow, leaning against the doorframe. "Sounds like a personal problem."
"Don't play games with me, Clara! You want money? I’ll wire ten million dollars to your account right now. Just hand over the hard drives. Hand over whatever leverage you think you have!" Julian slammed his palm against the door, his face twisting in desperation.
Clara let out a cold, humorless laugh. "Ten million? Julian, you took everything from me when you threw me and our sick baby out onto the street four years ago. You told the courts I was unfit, you froze my accounts, and you tried to take full custody of Mia just so you could control us."
"That was business!" Julian shouted.
"And this is personal," Clara snapped back, her eyes flashing with fury. "You thought you could crush us under your boot heels. You thought working-class women had no voice. Well, listen closely, Julian: I am not asking for a payout. I am asking for justice. And by tomorrow morning, the entire world will know what kind of frauds run the Sterling empire."
Before Julian could scream another threat, Clara slammed the door in his face, sliding the deadbolt locked.

Outside, Julian’s frantic fists beat against the wood. "Clara! Open the door! You can't do this!"
Clara walked calmly back to her desk, pressed Send on an email containing the initial encrypted document drop to three major investigative journalists, and whispered to the empty room: "Watch me."
