Chapter 7 - The Final Chess Move

Two weeks later, the once-mighty Sterling estate in the Hamptons was quiet, save for the sound of crashing Atlantic waves against the shore.

Eleanor Sterling, discharged from the hospital under strict medical supervision and facing criminal conspiracy charges, sat alone in her massive, empty living room. The staff had all resigned or been dismissed. The bank accounts were frozen. Her social circle had vanished like smoke in the wind.

The heavy front doors swung open.

Footsteps clicked across the marble foyer.

Eleanor didn't turn her head until Clara walked into her field of vision, standing tall and poised in the center of the room.

"You..." Eleanor hissed, her voice weak and venomous. "You ruthless little monster. You took everything. Our home, our name, our legacy."

Clara crossed her arms, looking down at the fallen matriarch with absolute pity rather than anger.

"I didn't take anything, Eleanor. I just stopped letting you steal from others," Clara said calmly. "You built a kingdom on the backs of destroyed lives, expecting everyone to bow down forever because of a last name."

Eleanor glared up at her, tears of pure frustration pooling in her eyes. "And what now? Are you going to throw me out on the street? Just like Julian did to you?"

"No," Clara said softly. "I'm not like you. I bought this house this morning at the government asset auction."

Eleanor gasped, her breath catching in her throat.

"And don't worry," Clara continued with a faint, confident smile. "You can keep your guest room for now. You’ll need a place to stay while you figure out your court-appointed defense attorney. Consider it my act of charity."

Clara turned on her heel, leaving the former queen of New York sitting in absolute, crushing silence.
