Chapter 1

“If that woman stays here, my baby and I are leaving forever.”

Valeria Cortés's voice echoed through the grand ballroom of the Fuentes family estate in San Pedro Garza García.

Every conversation stopped.

Even the string quartet fell silent amid the sky-blue balloons, white hydrangeas, and beautifully wrapped gifts tied with silk ribbons.

Valeria was eight months pregnant.

One hand rested protectively on her belly, shielding the little boy she had fought so hard to bring into the world.

She had endured four fertility treatments, two heartbreaking miscarriages, and years of cruel comments from people who doubted she would ever become a mother.

This baby was the miracle she had waited for almost her entire life.

And yet...

Her husband, Rodrigo Fuentes, had just walked into the baby shower...

Arm in arm with another woman.

Her name was Renata Solís.

She was 22 years old, wearing a bright red dress, impossibly high heels, and the confident smile of someone who clearly didn't see herself as a guest.

She wandered through the mansion as though she had already decided which bedroom would soon belong to her.

Rodrigo—the heir to one of the largest construction companies in northern Mexico—never let go of her arm.

“Renata has every right to be here.”

Valeria stared at him.

“The right to what?”

“This is a celebration for our son.”

Renata glanced at the banner that read:

"Welcome, Emiliano."

Then she gently placed a hand over her perfectly flat stomach.

“The word our could still change... couldn't it?”

No one dared challenge Octavio Fuentes or his wife, Leonor—Rodrigo's parents and the owners of the mansion.

Leonor walked over to Renata and lovingly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear...

With a tenderness she had never once shown her own daughter-in-law.

“At last...” she said.

“A young, healthy woman who isn't always surrounded by medical drama.”

“It's about time this family started thinking about its future.”

For six years, Valeria had endured endless humiliation.

They chose her clothes.

Corrected the way she spoke.

Excluded her from every important family meeting.

She had even resigned from her job as an auditor because Rodrigo insisted...

“A Fuentes wife shouldn't be looking into other people's finances.”

Even so...

She refused to lower her head.

“Tell her to leave.”

Rodrigo casually tossed his jacket onto a chair.

“Don't give me orders in my house.”

“It's my home too.”

“You only live here because we allow it.”

Valeria swallowed the pain.

“Then either she leaves...”

“Or I do.”

Renata sighed dramatically.

“You really shouldn't upset yourself.”

“It could be bad for the baby.”

Rodrigo immediately turned toward his mistress.

“Are you okay?”

That single question shattered what remained of their marriage.

“You're a coward,” Valeria said quietly.

“Every single one of you.”

Rodrigo stormed across the room.

Without warning...

He shoved her with both hands—

Straight into her chest...

And her swollen belly.

Valeria lost her balance and crashed into the table stacked with baby gifts.

A serving tray shattered.

Her back slammed against the table's edge...

Before she hit the polished marble floor.

Several guests screamed.

Valeria instinctively wrapped both arms around her abdomen...

Praying for movement.

Then...

Little Emiliano kicked.

She let out a shaky breath.

“You made me do it,” Rodrigo snapped.

At that moment...

Leonor began clapping.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

A second later...

Octavio joined in.

“Someone had to teach her where she belongs,” her mother-in-law murmured.

Rodrigo pointed proudly at Renata.

“She's pregnant.”

“She's carrying the real heir.”

Renata smiled.

“Some women are born to give a family its legacy.”

“Others are only meant to keep trying.”

Valeria looked down at the broken clock lying among the scattered gift boxes.

It read 1:59.

Instead of crying...

She smiled.

For fourteen months, she had quietly copied invoices...

Recorded conversations...

Tracked money transfers into shell companies...

And gathered every piece of evidence she could find.

They had mistaken her silence for obedience.

She looked Rodrigo straight in the eye.

“You should have found out who you were really married to.”

At exactly 2:00 p.m....

The first police siren echoed from beyond the mansion gates.
