Chapter 5 - THE FOX IN THE HENHOUSEThree weeks later, the once-feared Fuentes estate had undergone a radical transformation.

The sky-blue baby shower balloons were long gone, replaced by quiet, peaceful serenity. The security guards patrolling the gates no longer wore the menacing black uniforms of Octavio's private cartel-linked thugs; they were licensed, elite federal protection agents assigned directly by the Attorney General's office to ensure Valeria and her unborn child remained completely safe.

Inside the master study—formerly Octavio Fuentes’s untouchable domain—Valeria sat behind the massive mahogany desk.

She wore a soft cream-colored linen dress that accommodated her now nine-month baby bump. Her hair fell in loose waves over her shoulders. She looked calm, radiant, and utterly untouchable.

On the desk sat a sleek laptop, a cup of chamomile tea, and a stack of financial restructuring documents.

Knock. Knock.

“Come in,” Valeria said without looking up.

The heavy oak door creaked open, and Mateo stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder under his arm. His face carried a mixture of nervous excitement and lingering disbelief.

“Valeria,” Mateo said, closing the door carefully behind him. “You’re not going to believe who is downstairs asking to see you.”

Valeria finally looked up from her screen, an eyebrow arched gracefully. “Let me guess. A high-priced defense attorney trying to negotiate a plea deal for Rodrigo?”

“Close,” Mateo smirked, tossing the manila folder onto the desk. “It’s Renata Solís.”

Valeria’s expression didn't change. She didn't look angry; she didn't look surprised. She simply took a slow sip of her tea.

“Bring her up,” Valeria instructed smoothly. “Let’s see what a 22-year-old gold digger has to say to the woman she tried to replace.”

Ten minutes later, the door swung open again.

Renata Solís did not look like the confident, radiant mistress who had strutted through the ballroom wearing a bright red dress three weeks ago. Her hair was limp and unwashed, her designer makeup was completely missing, and she wore a cheap, oversized gray hoodie that swallowed her frame. The high heels were gone, replaced by scuffed white sneakers.

She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Valeria sitting behind the desk—Octavio's desk—looking like a corporate empress.

Renata swallowed hard, her lower lip trembling. She took a hesitant step forward.

“Valeria...” Renata whispered, her voice cracking. “Please... you have to help me.”

Valeria leaned back in her leather executive chair, resting her hands gently on her swollen belly. She looked at the young woman with cold, dispassionate eyes.

“Help you?” Valeria repeated, her voice dripping with amusement. “Renata, if I recall correctly, you told me at the baby shower that some women are born to give a family its legacy, while others are only meant to keep trying. Weren't those your exact words?”

Renata burst into tears, her facade of arrogance completely shattered. She rushed forward, slamming her hands down on the mahogany desk and leaning in close.

“I was stupid!” Renata sobbed frantically. “Rodrigo lied to me! He told me his family was rich, that they were invincible, that he was going to divorce you and give me everything! I didn't know they were laundering money! I didn't know the feds were going to seize my bank accounts! They froze my personal savings, Valeria! They’re threatening to charge me with conspiracy and send me to federal prison for ten years! I’m twenty-two years old! My life is over!”

Valeria watched her with absolute indifference. She didn't feel pity. She didn't feel anger. She felt nothing at all—which was infinitely more terrifying than rage.

“Your life isn't over, Renata,” Valeria said evenly. “It’s just beginning to face the consequences of your choices.”

“You can drop the charges!” Renata pleaded, dropping to her knees on the Persian rug and clutching at the hem of Valeria’s dress. “You have the power! The prosecutor listens to you! You own this estate now! Please, Valeria, have mercy! I’ll leave the state! I’ll never come back to Monterrey! I’ll disappear!”

Valeria reached down, gently but firmly pulling her dress out of Renata’s trembling grip.

“Mercy?” Valeria said softly. “Did Octavio show me mercy when he humiliated me for six years? Did Leonor show me mercy when she mocked my fertility treatments? Did Rodrigo show mercy when he shoved me—eight months pregnant—into a glass table?”

Renata sobbed harder, burying her face in her hands.

“You thought you were stepping into a palace,” Valeria continued, standing up slowly from her chair, her presence towering over the kneeling girl. “You thought you were replacing a wife you deemed weak and broken. But you didn't realize you were walking into a trap set by a woman who had already spent a year watching your precious Rodrigo steal from the very people he claimed to protect.”

Valeria walked around the desk, stopping just inches from Renata.

“Get up,” Valeria commanded.

Renata sniffled, looking up with pathetic, tear-filled eyes.

“I didn't call the federal agents here to ruin your life, Renata,” Valeria said, her voice dropping to a cold, razor-sharp whisper. “I called them to uphold the law. What happens to you now is up to the federal prosecutor and a jury of your peers. Not me.”

She turned her back on the weeping girl and looked out the massive arched window toward the gardens.

“Take her out,” Valeria called out.

Two federal agents immediately stepped into the study, grabbed Renata by the arms, and hauled her out of the room, her desperate screams echoing down the grand hallway until the heavy oak doors shut them out completely.

Mateo watched the door close, letting out a low whistle.

“Remind me never to get on your bad side, big sister,” Mateo grinned.

Valeria turned back to her brother, a faint, knowing smile touching the corners of her lips.

“Just be loyal, Mateo,” she replied quietly. “That’s all it takes.”

Suddenly, Valeria froze.

Her hand snapped down to her lower abdomen. Her breath hitched.

Mateo noticed immediately, his playful expression vanishing instantly. “Valeria? What is it? Is it the baby?”

May you like

Valeria closed her eyes, breathing through a sudden, sharp wave of pressure.

“Mateo...” she whispered, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edge of the desk. “Call the obstetrician. Emiliano is ready to meet us.”
