Chapter 2 - THE SOUND OF FALLING EMPIRESThe wail of a police siren did not merely break the silence; it shattered it like a sledgehammer striking plate glass.

Inside the grand ballroom of the Fuentes estate, the air instantly changed from arrogant smugness to cold, creeping dread. The string quartet stopped playing altogether, the cellist dropping his bow against the polished wood floor with a soft clatter.

Octavio Fuentes, patriarch of the empire and a man whose word had dictated real estate and political corruption in San Pedro Garza García for three decades, sneered. He took a slow sip of his whiskey, his eyes locked on Valeria, who was still on the floor, her hands protectively wrapped around her swollen belly.

“A noise complaint?” Octavio scoffed, his deep voice carrying effortless condescension. “You think calling the local police will scare us, Valeria? My security detail pays off the precinct commander every Monday morning. By 2:05, those officers will be apologizing to me and hauling your dramatic ass out of my gates.”

Rodrigo stepped over a shattered crystal plate, a cruel smirk twisting his handsome face. He looked down at his wife like she was a bug he had finally grown tired of stepping on.

“You absolute fool,” Rodrigo hissed, kneeling down just enough to whisper venom in her ear. “You thought you could threaten me? Look around you, Valeria. Look at these walls. Look at the armed guards outside. My father built this city's skyline. You are a nobody from a broken family whom I plucked out of obscurity. You have nothing.”

Valeria didn't cry.

She didn't scream.

Slowly, painfully, using the heavy mahogany leg of the gift table for leverage, she pushed herself up. Her back throbbed from the impact against the table's edge, but her eyes were remarkably, terrifyingly calm.

She brushed a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead, looked directly into Rodrigo's eyes, and whispered:

“Look outside, Rodrigo. Those aren't local cops.”

CRASH.

The massive, wrought-iron front gates—imported straight from Spain and weighing over three tons—did not just open. They collapsed inward, crushed beneath the weight of three black, heavy-duty tactical armored vehicles bearing the insignia of the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) and the National Guard.

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom blew open with a violent blast of wind.

Dozens of elite federal agents dressed in full black tactical gear, carrying assault rifles and wearing ballistic helmets, poured into the pristine white and gold room. Their heavy combat boots left muddy tracks across the imported Italian marble, trampling the pale blue hydrangeas and crushed silk ribbons underfoot.

“Federal Agents! Nobody move!”

The sharp, amplified command echoed off the high ceilings.

Octavio dropped his whiskey glass. It shattered against the floor, the amber liquid splattering across his expensive leather shoes. For the first time in his life, the color drained entirely from the older man’s face.

“What is the meaning of this?!” Octavio roared, stepping forward, puffing out his chest with the desperate authority of a man who believed he was above the law. “Do you know who I am? I am Octavio Fuentes! I fund half the state senate’s campaigns! Put those guns down right now or—!”

A tall woman with piercing green eyes and hair pulled back into a severe bun stepped through the ring of armed agents. She wore a sharp charcoal suit and held a thick leather binder stamped with the federal seal.

She didn't even look at Octavio. Instead, she walked straight past him, ignoring the gasps of the elite guests, and stopped directly in front of Valeria Cortés.

To the utter shock of everyone in the room, the federal prosecutor gave Valeria a crisp, formal military nod.

“Mrs. Cortés,” Agent Elena Garza said clearly, her voice cutting through the terrified silence of the room. “The operation is a complete success. All three primary accounts have been frozen, and the digital mirror servers in the Cayman Islands have been successfully seized.”

Valeria let out a long, slow breath. She placed a hand on her belly, felt Emiliano give a strong, reassuring kick, and looked at her husband.

“Thank you, Agent Garza,” Valeria said, her voice steady and echoing clearly through the microphone of the live-stream camera that had suddenly flickered to life on a tripod near the entrance—a camera Valeria had secretly planted and programmed to activate the moment the federal raid began.

Rodrigo stared at the prosecutor, then at Valeria, his mind struggling to process the nightmare unfolding before him.

“What... what is happening?” Rodrigo stammered, his voice cracking. “Agent, listen to me, my father—my family—this is a mistake! My wife is unstable, she’s crazy—!”

Agent Garza finally turned her gaze to Rodrigo, a look of utter disgust crossing her face.

“Rodrigo Fuentes,” the prosecutor said, pulling a warrant from her binder. “You are under arrest for corporate espionage, international money laundering, tax evasion exceeding four hundred million pesos, and conspiracy to commit fraud through state shell companies.”

She didn't stop there.

She turned her eyes toward Octavio and Leonor.

“And Octavio Fuentes, Leonor Fuentes... you are both being detained as co-conspirators in a massive criminal syndicate operating under the guise of Fuentes Construction.”

Renata Solís, the 22-year-old mistress, let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek. She clutched her flat stomach, her bright red dress suddenly looking entirely out of place among federal tactical gear.

“Me?!” Renata screamed, pointing frantically at herself. “I didn't do anything! I’m just his girlfriend! You can’t touch me, do you know who—?”

“Shut your mouth, girl,” Agent Garza snapped without looking at her. “You signed three ghost-employee payroll contracts under Fuentes Construction last month, receiving two million pesos for services rendered to a company you’ve never worked for. You’re going away for a very long time.”

Octavio lunged forward, his face purple with rage. “This is a setup! Show me the proof! Where is the evidence? Who signed these warrants? No judge in this state would sign a warrant against me without my approval!”

Valeria stepped forward, her pregnant silhouette standing tall and unyielding against the opulent backdrop of the ruined baby shower.

She reached into her pocket, pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, and tossed it onto the glass coffee table in front of Octavio.

“Every judge in Nuevo León is corrupt,” Valeria said softly. “That’s why I took the evidence straight to the federal attorney general in Mexico City six months ago.”

The room went dead silent. You could hear the hum of the camera streaming every word to millions of viewers online.

Valeria turned to face her husband, who was now being forced to his knees by two heavily armed federal agents as cold steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists.

“You told me a Fuentes wife shouldn’t look into other people's finances, Rodrigo,” Valeria whispered, her eyes burning with a fierce, vindictive light.

“So I looked into yours instead.”
