Chapter 3 - THE WIFE WHO KNEW TOO MUCHThe flash drive spinning slowly on the glass table felt like a ticking bomb.

Octavio Fuentes stared at it as if it were a venomous snake ready to strike. His chest heaved beneath his bespoke Italian suit, his face turning an alarming shade of mottled red.
“You...” Octavio choked out, his voice trembling not with grief, but with sheer, unadulterated fury. He tried to lunge toward Valeria, but a federal agent shoved him back down onto the velvet sofa with enough force to rattle the crystal chandelier overhead. “You pathetic, ungrateful parasite! We pulled you out of a middle-class townhouse! We gave you a name! We gave you this life!”
“You gave me a cage,” Valeria corrected instantly, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. She didn't flinch. She didn't step back. Eight months pregnant, she stood over her powerful father-in-law with the cold authority of a queen looking down at a condemned traitor.
“You thought locking me in this mansion, stripping away my career as a senior forensic auditor, and treating me like a breeding mare would keep me blind,” Valeria continued, stepping closer so he could see the absolute resolution in her eyes. “You forgot one small detail, Octavio: I didn't forget how to audit. I just changed my target from corporate balance sheets to your family's criminal enterprise.”
Rodrigo was struggling against the agents pinning his arms behind his back. The handcuffs clicked tight, biting into his wrists. He looked up at his wife with eyes wide in sheer terror and disbelief.
“Valeria... baby... please,” Rodrigo whimpered, shedding his arrogance instantly like a snake shedding its skin. The tough corporate heir was gone, replaced by a terrified little boy hiding behind his mother's skirt. “You’re my wife. We’re having a baby. Think of Emiliano! How can you do this to our family?”
Valeria looked down at her husband—the man who, less than ten minutes ago, had shoved her violently into a table, risking the life of their unborn child just to impress a 22-year-old mistress.
“Our family?” Valeria repeated, a bitter, humorless laugh escaping her lips. “You brought your mistress to our baby shower, Rodrigo. Your mother clapped when you pushed me into a glass table. You signed your own death warrant the moment you decided my son and I were disposable.”
Leonor Fuentes, who had spent six years looking down her nose at Valeria, finally lost her icy composure. She clutched her diamond necklace, her face pale, her lips trembling.
“You’ll never get away with this,” Leonor hissed, her voice vibrating with venom. “The political connections we have... the governors, the judges, the cartel leaders we’ve bought off—they will hunt you down to the ends of the earth! Even if we go to prison, you won't survive the week!”
Agent Elena Garza stepped forward, her hand resting casually on the butt of her sidearm. She offered a cold, dangerous smile.
“Mrs. Fuentes,” Agent Garza said smoothly, “you might want to check your phone before you make threats about your powerful friends.”
Leonor frowned, trembling as she pulled her designer handbag off the chair and fished out her gold-plated smartphone. Her screen was lit up with hundreds of missed notifications—text messages, missed calls, and breaking news alerts from every major national media outlet in Mexico.
Leonor tapped the top news alert.
Her breath caught in her throat. Her eyes rolled back, and she would have collapsed onto the floor if an agent hadn't caught her by the elbow.
The headline blazed across every screen in the country:
BREAKING: FUENTES CONSTRUCTION COLLAPSES AS FEDERAL AUTHORITIES SEIZE 4.2 BILLION PESOS IN MONEY LAUNDERING RAID. GOVERNOR STATE OFFICIALS IMPLICATED.
“It’s... it’s all gone,” Leonor whispered, staring blankly at the screen. “Everything... gone.”
“Every single asset,” Agent Garza confirmed loudly so everyone in the ballroom could hear. “Bank accounts, real estate holdings, luxury vehicles, offshore accounts in the Bahamas, and the entire construction conglomerate. All seized under the National Asset Forfeiture Act, based entirely on the forensic audit files provided by Mrs. Valeria Cortés.”
Renata Solís let out a piercing shriek of pure panic. She lunged toward Rodrigo, grabbing the lapels of his suit jacket and shaking him furiously.
“You lied to me!” Renata screamed, tears streaming down her carefully made-up face, ruining her expensive mascara. “You said your family was untouchable! You said you were going to divorce her and put me on the deed to the penthouse! You said I was going to be rich!”
Rodrigo shoved her away with his bound hands, a look of pure loathing on his face. “Get away from me, you stupid gold-digging bitch! This is all your fault!”
“My fault?!” Renata shrieked, clawing at the air. “You brought me here! You told me to rub my pregnancy in her face!”
“Silence!” Agent Garza barked, motioning to the tactical team. “Cuff them all. Transport the senior Fuentes and Rodrigo to the federal detention facility immediately. And get a medical unit in here for Mrs. Cortés—make sure she and the baby are examined thoroughly.”
As the federal agents began hauling the screaming, weeping members of the Fuentes dynasty out of the grand ballroom, Rodrigo was dragged past Valeria.
He stopped for a fraction of a second, his eyes bloodshot and desperate.
“Valeria... please,” he choked out. “Please don't do this. I love you.”
Valeria looked down at him with absolute, freezing indifference.

“Save your breath, Rodrigo,” she said quietly. “You’re going to need it when you try to explain to your cellmates why you lost a four-billion-peso empire because you couldn't keep your hands to yourself.”
With a final, sharp jerk, the agents dragged Rodrigo out through the shattered wrought-iron gates, sealing the fate of the once-mighty Fuentes family forever.
