Chapter 10 - Whispering TapesThe deep basement of the Old National Bank felt like a tomb. Heavy steel walls, cold brass boxes lining the room, and the soft hum of an ancient ventilation system.

The security guard used his master key, Ethan inserted key 309, and with a heavy metallic click, the long metal box slid out from the wall.

Marcus stepped back to give Ethan privacy.

Ethan’s hands trembled slightly as he lifted the lid. Inside lay three items: a bound black leather journal, a small cassette tape player with a single micro-tape inside, and a certified copy of a medical toxicology report from ten years ago.

Ethan pulled out the toxicology report first. The name at the top was Arthur Whitmore. The date was three weeks before the car crash.

His eyes scanned down the chemical analysis. Highlighted in red ink was a high concentration of Thallium—a tasteless, odorless heavy metal poison that simulated gradual heart failure.

Attached to the report was a handwritten note in his father's jagged, elegant penmanship:

“If you are reading this, Ethan, my time has run out. The heart attacks are not natural. Eleanor has been lacing my evening tea for six months. She discovered I was transferring the offshore accounts into a trust for you and Claire’s family. She knows I am filing for divorce. If I die in an 'accident', do not trust her. Look for David—he has the second key.”

Ethan felt the room spin. The air in his lungs turned to ice.

His mother hadn't just been a strict, controlling matriarch. She was a killer.

He picked up the small cassette recorder, pressed play, and brought it to his ear. The tape hissed with static before a weak, raspy voice filled the quiet vault:

“Ethan... my son. Eleanor is threatening Claire and her father. She forced David to forge the embezzlement papers to ruin their credibility so no court would believe them if they spoke out. I am hiding the ledger with David. If Eleanor finds out Claire knows... she will kill her too. Forgive me for not being strong enough to protect you both...”

The tape ended with the sound of a heavy door slamming and Arthur coughing violently.

Ethan gripped the edge of the metal table until his knuckles popped. The rage that exploded inside him was unlike anything he had ever felt. His entire life—his grief, his devotion to the company, his resentment toward Claire—was a lie constructed by the woman who had murdered his father in cold blood.

"Marcus," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he closed the metal box.

"Sir?"

"Call the chief of police. Tell him I have forensic evidence of a ten-year-old homicide." Ethan turned around, his eyes burning with absolute vengeance. "And tell him to put a tail on Eleanor Whitmore immediately. She’s not going to escape this night."
