Chapter 13 - The Unburied GhostThree days after Eleanor’s arrest, the weather finally cleared, leaving a crisp, cool autumn afternoon over the city cemetery.

Ethan stood beside the marble gravestone of his father, Arthur Whitmore. The grass around it was green and fresh, untouched by the storm of scandal currently consuming the city outside.

A shadow fell over the grave. Ethan turned to see Claire walking slowly down the stone path, leaning lightly on a wooden cane.

"The doctors said you shouldn't be walking yet," Ethan said gently, stepping forward to offer his arm.

Claire took it, resting her weight against his side. "I’ve spent ten years running away, Ethan. A little limp isn't going to stop me from standing here."

They both looked down at the headstone in silence for a long moment.

"I’m sorry, Claire," Ethan murmured, his voice trembling with an old, deep sorrow. "For ten years... I hated you. I thought you abandoned me. I thought your family stole from us. I was blind."

Claire stopped and looked up at him. She reached up, placing her soft hand against his cheek. "She was a master at controlling people, Ethan. She made you see what she wanted you to see. I didn't come back to hurt you. I came back because your father deserved peace... and so did you."

Ethan pulled the small brass key from his pocket and held it out. "The police released the safety deposit contents back to me today. There was one more thing in the box that I didn't show the police."

Claire frowned faintly. "What?"

Ethan unfolded a small, faded piece of paper. It was a secondary codicil to Arthur Whitmore's will, written in his own hand, dated three days before his death.

“To my son, Ethan. If you ever find this, know that love is the only true legacy worth protecting. The Whitmore fortune is built on blood and vanity. Leave it behind. Build something real with Claire.”

Claire stared at the paper, tears brimming in her eyes. "He knew..."

"He knew," Ethan agreed softly. "He knew what she was, and he tried to give us a way out."

Ethan pulled Claire close, wrapping his arm around her shoulders as the cool breeze rustled the golden leaves above them.
