Chapter 2 - The Siren's EchoThe siren scream in the distance shattered the heavy, suffocating silence of the Whitmore manor grand ballroom.

Ethan didn't move from Claire’s side. His hand pressed against her trembling back, feeling the ragged flutter of her breath against his palm. Around them, the glittering elite of the city stood frozen—champagne flutes suspended halfway to painted lips, eyes wide with the dirty thrill of witnessing a dynasty implode.

"Stay with me, Claire. Don't speak," Ethan whispered, his voice dangerously low, stripped of its usual corporate chill. "Just breathe."

Claire’s lips were bloodless, but her hand clamped around his forearm with a desperate force. "The brass key... pocket..." she rasped. "Don't... let her touch it."

Ethan’s eyes flicked up. Eleanor stood three steps up the grand staircase. Her diamond necklace caught the light, casting sharp daggers across her pale chest. Her hands were folded neatly, but her left eyelid twitched faintly—a tiny glitch in her thirty-year facade.

"Ethan, darling," Eleanor said, carrying her voice effortlessly over the hushed crowd. "You’re letting hysteria cloud your judgment. The girl had too much to drink. She slipped. The maid was confused."

The young maid stepped forward, her hands shaking, but her eyes burning. "I saw her push her, Mr. Whitmore! She put both hands on her back and shoved!"

"You are fired," Eleanor snapped instantly. "Leave this house immediately before I have you arrested for slander."

"She stays," Ethan bellowed.

The word cracked through the hall like a gunshot. In thirty-two years, Ethan Whitmore had never once raised his voice to his mother. He had been the dutiful heir who turned Whitmore Enterprise into a global titan, believing every word of the narrative his mother had constructed around their tragedy.

Ethan slipped his fingers into the torn pocket of Claire’s dress. His fingertips brushed cold, heavy metal. He pulled out the small brass key. It was tarnished, stamped with an old three-digit registration number: 309.

When Eleanor saw the key, the remaining color drained entirely from her face.

"Where did you get that?" Eleanor breathed.

"She gave it to me," Ethan said softly. "Paramedics! In here! Move!"

The double doors burst open as paramedics rushed in with a gurney. As they gently lifted Claire, Ethan slipped the brass key deep into his inner jacket pocket.

Eleanor glided down the stairs. "Ethan, let the doctors handle her. You need to handle the press outside. We have a reputation—"

Ethan brushed her hand away as if her skin were venomous. "The police are pulling up behind the ambulance, Mother. You aren't leaving this room. And if the security footage disappears tonight, I will personally see to it that every board member sees you hauled out in handcuffs."

"You would destroy your own mother for a ghost?" Eleanor hissed.

"I’m going to find out whose ghost has been haunting this house," Ethan replied, turning his back on her.
