Chapter 5 - The Poison in the IVAt 3:00 AM, St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was bathed in eerie fluorescent light. In Room 512, Claire lay motionless. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the room.

Outside the door, the two guards Marcus had posted were lured away by a fake emergency security call regarding a suspicious vehicle in the parking garage.
The heavy wooden door of Room 512 pushed open silently.
A tall figure clad in a grey nurse’s scrub slipped inside. In her gloved right hand, she carried a small syringe filled with a clear, lethal dosage of potassium chloride.
, Eleanor whispered softly, lowering her mask just enough to show her cold, cruel smile. "Ten years ago, you took my son’s heart. Tonight, you tried to take my freedom."
Eleanor raised the needle toward the rubber port of the IV tube.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Eleanor."
The voice came from the dark corner of the room. The curtain was yanked back. Ethan stepped into the dim light, his face pale, his eyes dark with absolute disgust. Beside him stood Detective Vance and two uniformed police officers with their guns drawn.
"Put the syringe on the tray, Mrs. Whitmore," Detective Vance commanded sternly.
Eleanor gasped, her hands trembling as the needle hovered inches from the IV line. "Ethan... this is a setup. She’s framing me!"
"The guards you paid off to leave the hallway were intercepted in the lobby ten minutes ago, Mother," Ethan said. "They already signed the statement naming you."
"They're lying!" Eleanor screeched. "I did everything for you! Your father was weak—he was going to give half our fortune to this accountant's daughter!"
May you like
"He was my father!" Ethan roared, snatching the syringe from her hand before shoving her backward into the waiting arms of the officers. "And you poisoned him!"
The officers snapped cold steel handcuffs around Eleanor’s wrists as she screamed hysterically down the quiet corridor.
