Chapter 11 - The Poison in the IVAt 3:00 AM, St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was bathed in eerie fluorescent light. Rain slapped hard against the sealed glass windows of the fifth floor.

In Room 512, Claire lay motionless. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the room.

Outside the door, the two guards Marcus had posted were gone—lured away by an emergency security call regarding a suspicious vehicle in the parking garage.

The heavy wooden door of Room 512 pushed open silently.

A tall figure clad in a grey nurse’s scrub and wearing a surgical mask slipped inside. In her gloved right hand, she carried a small syringe filled with a clear, lethal dosage of potassium chloride—enough to induce an instantaneous, untraceable cardiac arrest.

The figure stepped up to the IV line connected to Claire’s arm.

"You always were a pest, Claire," Eleanor whispered softly, lowering her surgical mask just enough to show her cold, cruel smile. "Ten years ago, you took my son’s heart. Tonight, you tried to take my freedom. I warned you never to come back."

Eleanor uncapped the needle and raised it toward the rubber port of the IV tube.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Eleanor."

The voice came from the dark corner of the room, behind the privacy curtain.

Eleanor froze. Her heart skipped a beat.

The curtain was yanked back with a sharp ring of metal hoops. Ethan stepped into the dim light, his face pale, his eyes dark with absolute disgust. Beside him stood Detective Vance and two uniformed police officers, their guns drawn and aimed directly at her chest.

"Put the syringe on the tray, Mrs. Whitmore," Detective Vance commanded sternly. "Slowly."

Eleanor stared at her son, her hands trembling as the needle hovered inches from the IV line. "Ethan... this is a setup. She’s framing me! She’s trying to destroy our family!"

"The guards you paid off to leave the hallway were intercepted in the lobby ten minutes ago, Mother," Ethan said, taking a slow step toward her. "They already confessed. They signed the statement naming you."

"They're lying!" Eleanor screeched, her aristocratic composure finally shattering into ugly, desperate terror. "I did everything for you! For the company! Your father was weak—he was going to give half our fortune to this accountant's daughter and her pathetic family!"

"He was my father!" Ethan roared, closing the distance and snatching the syringe from her hand before shoving her backward into the waiting arms of the officers. "And you poisoned him! Day by day! You murdered him and made me call you a hero for ten years!"

The officers snapped cold steel handcuffs around Eleanor’s manicured wrists.

"Ethan! You can't do this to me!" Eleanor screamed, thrashing as they forced her toward the door. "I am Eleanor Whitmore! You are nothing without me! The company will collapse!"

May you like

"The company will survive," Ethan spat, glaring at her with cold contempt. "But you won't. Take her away."

As the police dragged a screaming Eleanor down the quiet hospital corridor, the heavy silence returned to Room 512.
