The metallic scrape of shovels against dirt echoed through the damp basement. Iris screamed in agony as another wave of contractions ripped through her body.

“Push all you want, sweetie,” Victoria laughed coldly, watching Iris squirm. “No doctor is coming. You’ll deliver that child right into a grave.”

Ethan’s wrist was bleeding heavily as he continuously rubbed his leather restraints against a sharp rusty nail sticking out from the wooden chair. Just a little more
he thought, his jaw clenched in pain.

SNAP.

The leather strap gave way. Keeping his hands hidden behind his back, Ethan waited for the right moment.

“Victoria!” Ethan shouted, distracting her. “If you kill us, the police will know! I sent my lawyer a sealed envelope with all your offshore accounts!”

Victoria paused, then burst into hysterics. “Your lawyer? You mean Mr. Vance? Ethan, who do you think helped me forge your father’s will in the first place?”

From the shadows near the basement stairs, a man stepped out wearing a sharp grey suit, wiping his glasses with a silk handkerchief. It was Arthur Vance—Ethan’s most trusted family attorney and his late father’s best friend.

“I’m sorry, Ethan,” Arthur said smoothly, putting his glasses back on. “Self-preservation is a powerful motivator. Victoria offered me 30% of the estate. You offered me a salary.”

“You bastard!” Ethan roared.

“Enough talking,” Victoria ordered, raising a pistol and aiming it directly at Iris’s head. “Let's finish this.”
