Chapter 4 - The Shadow Identity

Instead of giving in, Daniel turned to the crowd. Among his friends in the front row sat Marcus Vance, a retired police captain Daniel had known for thirty years.
"Marcus!" Daniel yelled, his voice cracking. "Lock the doors! Call the precinct! She’s holding Emily!"
Rebecca’s eyes went wide. She hadn't expected him to call her bluff. She turned to run toward the fire exit, her massive wedding dress heavy and awkward, but Marcus and two other men were already moving. Within seconds, Marcus tackled the photographer—Rebecca’s accomplice who had been standing near the exit—while two venue guards blocked Rebecca’s path.
Police sirens began wailing in the distance within five minutes.
As officers flooded the venue and cuffed Rebecca, Detective Sarah Jenkins stepped into the room. She looked at Rebecca, then turned to Daniel with a dark expression.
"Mr. Miller," Detective Jenkins said, pulling out a tablet. "We’ve been monitoring this woman under three different names across three states. Her name isn't Rebecca Taylor. It’s Veronica Vance."

Daniel stared in disbelief. "What?"
"She’s a professional black widow," Jenkins explained. "She targets wealthy widowers, drains their assets through forged power-of-attorney documents, and disappears. But we never had physical proof of violence... until now."
