CHAPTER 1 — The Divorce He Thought Was His Greatest Victory

"Sign it."

Those were the last words Ethan Crawford said to his wife before sliding the divorce papers across the polished mahogany table.

Olivia looked down at the documents.

Twelve years.

Twelve years of building a life together.

Twelve years of believing love mattered more than money.

Apparently...

She had been wrong.

"You have nothing without me," Ethan said with a smug smile, adjusting the cuffs of his custom-made Italian suit.

Outside the glass walls of Crawford Technologies, hundreds of employees hurried through another busy Monday morning.

Inside...

A marriage was quietly dying.

Olivia stared at the man she had once loved.

The man who had started his tiny software company from a rented garage.

The man whose dreams she had believed in long before anyone else.

She remembered sleeping on a mattress on the office floor because they couldn't afford rent.

She remembered selling her grandmother's jewelry to cover payroll during the company's first difficult year.

She remembered working eighteen-hour days while Ethan met investors.

She wrote business proposals.

Negotiated supplier contracts.

Designed marketing campaigns.

Managed customer service.

Even named the company's first product.

But none of that appeared anywhere on paper.

Officially...

She was only "the supportive wife."

Ethan had made sure of that.

"I'll be generous," he continued, pushing a pen toward her.

"The house stays with me because it's registered under my name."

"The company stays with me."

"You'll receive fifty thousand dollars."

"Enough to start over."

Olivia slowly looked up.

"Fifty thousand?"

He laughed.

"You should be grateful."

His attorney smiled politely.

"You have no legal ownership in Crawford Technologies."

No shares.

No voting rights.

No board position.

Nothing.

Everything had been carefully arranged years earlier while Olivia trusted him completely.

"What about all the years I invested?"

Ethan leaned back comfortably.

"Love isn't an investment."

"It's a choice."

"And I choose success."

The words hit harder than any slap.

Then...

The office door opened.

A tall blonde woman entered without knocking.

Victoria Hayes.

Chief Marketing Officer.

Twenty-nine years old.

Elegant.

Confident.

And wearing Ethan's jacket.

She froze for only a second after seeing Olivia.

Then smiled.

"Oh..."

"I didn't realize your meeting wasn't finished."

Olivia noticed the lipstick stain on Ethan's collar.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Late-night meetings.

Business trips.

Locked phones.

Perfume that wasn't hers.

Twelve years had ended long before today.

Ethan stood and casually wrapped an arm around Victoria's waist.

"I was going to tell you eventually."

"No point hiding it anymore."

Victoria didn't even pretend to feel guilty.

"We're in love."

Silence.

Olivia expected tears.

Instead...

She felt strangely calm.

"So this was the plan?"

Ethan shrugged.

"I deserve someone who fits my future."

"You've become..."

He paused.

"...ordinary."

The word lingered in the room like poison.

Olivia quietly signed the papers.

No argument.

No begging.

No screaming.

Even Ethan looked surprised.

"You aren't going to fight?"

She closed the folder.

"No."

His smile widened.

"Smart decision."

As Olivia walked toward the elevator carrying nothing but one small cardboard box, employees whispered behind her.

"Poor Mrs. Crawford..."

"She lost everything."

"I heard he already replaced her."

Some even looked away in embarrassment.

No one followed her outside.

Rain poured over the city.

She stood on the sidewalk for several minutes.

Alone.

Jobless.

Homeless.

Forgotten.

Until a black luxury sedan slowly stopped beside her.

The rear window lowered.

An elderly woman with silver hair looked directly into Olivia's eyes.

"I've been waiting for this day."

Olivia frowned.

"I'm sorry... do I know you?"

The woman smiled gently.

"No."

"But your father knew me."

Olivia's heartbeat stopped.

"My father died twenty years ago."

The woman handed her an old brass key.

"He didn't die with all his secrets."

"Get in."

"If you're ready to learn who you really are."

Olivia looked back one last time.

Through the glass walls high above...

Ethan laughed as he kissed Victoria.

He believed he had just won everything.

He had no idea...

He had just pushed away the only person who had secretly made his empire possible.

And somewhere...

May you like

Far beyond Crawford Technologies...

A billion-dollar legacy was waiting for its true heir.
