CHAPTER 4 — The Man Who Came Back Crawling

Three months after Olivia took over Crawford Technologies...

Ethan Crawford returned to the building through the employee entrance.

No cameras.

No assistants.

No expensive suit.

Just a wrinkled shirt, tired eyes, and a visitor badge that said:

TEMPORARY CONTRACTOR.

The security guard didn't recognize him.

That hurt more than Ethan expected.

He had once walked through these doors like a king.

Now...

He had to wait in line behind interns.

When the elevator opened on the seventeenth floor, Ethan saw something that made his stomach twist.

Employees were laughing.

Not nervously.

Not fake laughing for a powerful boss.

Real laughing.

The office looked brighter.

The toxic silence he had created was gone.

Olivia's name appeared everywhere.

Not on golden plaques.

But in the changes.

Paid parental leave.

Health benefits.

Scholarship programs.

Employee profit-sharing.

People didn't fear her.

They respected her.

And that terrified Ethan.

Because for the first time...

He realized power and leadership were not the same thing.

His temporary supervisor handed him a stack of files.

"Conference Room B. Sort these before noon."

Ethan froze.

Conference Room B.

That was the same room where he had once forced Olivia to sign away her life.

"Problem?" the supervisor asked.

Ethan swallowed.

"No."

Inside the room, he found an envelope waiting on the table.

His name was written across the front.

He opened it with shaking hands.

Inside was a single photograph.

Olivia, twelve years earlier, sleeping on the floor beside a broken laptop.

On the back, one sentence had been written:

"She built what you stole."

Ethan stumbled backward.

At that exact moment...

The door opened.

Victoria walked in.

But she wasn't wearing designer clothes anymore.

Her blonde hair was tied messily.

Her expensive confidence had disappeared.

"Ethan," she whispered.

"What are you doing here?"

He stared at her badge.

MARKETING ASSISTANT.

"You work here?"

Victoria's face burned with shame.

"Blackwood Global hired me after no one else would."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"She hired you?"

"No," Victoria said.

"She saved me."

That answer hit him like a punch.

Victoria lowered her voice.

"When your investors found out you had hidden losses, they dropped you."

"When the banks froze your accounts, everyone disappeared."

"Olivia could have blacklisted me."

"But she didn't."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Don't defend her."

Victoria's eyes hardened.

"I'm not defending her."

"I'm telling you what kind of woman you threw away."

Before Ethan could answer...

The glass wall suddenly lit up with breaking news.

CRAWFORD TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCES FEDERAL INVESTIGATION INTO FORMER EXECUTIVE MISCONDUCT.

Ethan's blood ran cold.

Former executive.

Not former company.

Not former leadership.

Former executive.

Him.

His phone began ringing.

Unknown number.

Then another.

Then another.

Across the hallway, employees started whispering.

Ethan slowly looked toward the top floor.

Olivia's office overlooked the city.

May you like

And for the first time in his life...

He understood what it felt like to be the one with no power.
