CHAPTER 1 – The Baby Monitor Caught What No One Was Supposed to Hear

Everyone thought Daniel Harper was the perfect husband.

He never raised his voice in public. He brought flowers home every Friday. He kissed his wife Emma before leaving for work and proudly showed off their newborn son, Noah, to everyone who would listen.

But perfection is often the best disguise.

On a stormy Tuesday night, Emma woke to Noah crying in his crib. Exhausted, she reached for the baby monitor—but the screen was black.

The power hadn't gone out.

Someone had unplugged it.

Confused, she walked toward the nursery. Before opening the door, she froze.

Daniel was already inside.

He wasn't comforting their son.

He was standing over the crib, staring at Noah with cold, emotionless eyes.

Then Emma heard him whisper something that made her blood run cold.

"If you had never been born... everything would already belong to me."

Emma gasped.

Daniel turned around instantly.

Their eyes locked.

For one terrifying second, neither of them moved.

Then Daniel smiled.

Not the warm smile she had fallen in love with.

A smile so empty... it looked almost inhuman.

"Emma," he said softly, "you weren't supposed to hear that."

She grabbed Noah and ran.

Daniel chased her through the dark hallway, begging her to stop.

"I can explain!"

But his voice no longer sounded desperate.

It sounded angry.

She locked herself in the bedroom and dialed 911.

No signal.

Every phone in the house had mysteriously lost service.

Outside, lightning flashed.

Inside, Daniel slowly knocked on the bedroom door.

Three knocks.

Then silence.

Five minutes later...

The knocking stopped.

Emma thought he had left.

Until she heard footsteps...

Coming from inside the attic above her.

Daniel wasn't trying to get through the door.

May you like

He was coming through the ceiling.
