CHAPTER 4 – The Recording That Changed Everything

Emma clutched the flashlight with trembling hands.

“Take me,” she shouted into the darkness. “Just leave my son alone!”

Silence.

Then Noah cried again.

The sound echoed from somewhere deep inside the tunnel.

Police officers split into teams, searching every passage. One detective noticed fresh footprints leading to a rusted steel door hidden beneath broken concrete.

They forced it open.

Inside was a room frozen in time.

Children's toys.

Tiny shoes.

Old cribs.

Family photographs covered every wall.

Every picture showed Daniel... standing beside different women.

Different babies.

Different years.

But Daniel never looked older.

Emma's heart pounded.

“What is this place?”

Detective Mason opened a dusty filing cabinet.

Inside were dozens of birth certificates.

Every child had mysteriously disappeared before their first birthday.

Every mother had either died... or vanished without a trace.

Then he found a cassette recorder.

A faded label read:

"Play only if Daniel returns."

The detective pressed PLAY.

Static filled the room.

Then an elderly man's voice began speaking.

“If you're hearing this... I failed.”

“My name is Richard Harper.”

“I was never Daniel's father.”

“I was the detective who arrested him after the fire twenty-six years ago.”

Emma's knees nearly gave out.

“What?”

The recording continued.

“He confessed everything.”

“He admitted setting the fire.”

“He admitted wanting the house... the money... and to be the only survivor.”

“But the next morning... every page of his confession disappeared.”

“So did every officer who interviewed him.”

The tape crackled.

Richard's breathing became frantic.

“Daniel isn't after money anymore.”

“He believes every firstborn child carries something he lost the night of the fire.”

“He calls it…”

‘The Second Life.’

Suddenly—

The recorder stopped.

Every light in the underground chamber shut off at once.

A child's laughter echoed through the darkness.

Not Noah's.

Someone else's.

Then Emma's phone vibrated.

A new live video had been sent from an unknown number.

She opened it.

The screen showed Noah asleep in a white crib.

Behind him...

Daniel slowly stepped into view.

He smiled at the camera.

Then whispered only six words.

“You're finally where I wanted you.”

The video ended.

At that exact moment...

The steel door slammed shut behind everyone.

And someone locked it...

May you like

From the outside.
