CHAPTER 3 – The Woman in the Basement

Emma screamed until her throat burned.
“Noah!”
Police locked down the house, but every door was still bolted from the inside. No broken windows. No muddy footprints. No sign of Daniel.
It was impossible.
Then Mrs. Evelyn grabbed Emma’s arm.
“The basement,” she whispered. “That house has an old storm tunnel.”
The officers rushed downstairs and found a wooden shelf pushed slightly away from the wall. Behind it was a narrow passage, hidden for decades.
Emma ran in before anyone could stop her.
The tunnel smelled like wet earth and old smoke. At the end, she heard Noah crying.
Then another sound.
A woman’s voice.
Soft. Weak.
“Please… don’t let him take another baby.”
Emma froze.
Behind an iron door sat a woman with silver hair, chained to the wall.
Her face was thin, her eyes haunted.
But when she looked at Emma, she whispered one sentence that destroyed everything Emma believed.
“I’m Daniel’s real mother.”
Emma stepped back, shaking.
The woman began to cry.
“Daniel was not adopted because his parents died. He was taken from me after the fire. He started it. He was only seven.”
Before Emma could answer, a speaker crackled above them.
Daniel’s voice filled the tunnel.
“Mother always loved telling stories.”
Then the lights went out.
Noah’s crying stopped.

And in the darkness, Daniel whispered from somewhere close:
“Now choose, Emma. Your baby… or the truth.”
