CHAPTER 8 – The Last Secret Beneath the Bell

The massive bronze bell crashed through the wooden floor with a deafening roar.
Everyone screamed.
Dust exploded through the chapel.
"NOAH!"
Emma raced toward the collapsing bell tower, convinced her son had been crushed.
But when the smoke cleared...
Noah was gone.
Only a small red toy car lay on the broken floor.
Daniel smiled.
"He made his choice."
Emma grabbed Daniel by the collar.
"Where is my son?"
Before Daniel could answer, Dr. Samuel Harper suddenly stepped between them.
His face had changed.
For the first time...
He looked afraid.
"No..."
he whispered.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
A deep rumble echoed beneath the chapel.
The cracked stone floor slowly began to split apart.
Hidden below was a gigantic underground laboratory.
Rows of computer servers flickered back to life.
Thousands of files appeared on enormous monitors.
Each file contained the name of a child.
A photograph.
A family.
A status.
ACTIVE
REPLACED
MISSING
Emma stared in horror.
"There are... thousands."
Dr. Harper closed his eyes.
"Not thousands..."
"Tens of thousands."
Michael looked around in disbelief.
"You've been replacing children for decades?"
The old scientist nodded.
"I wanted to erase pain."
"I wanted every grieving family to believe they had been given another chance."
Daniel laughed loudly.
"You still don't understand, Father."
"You never created second chances."
"You created perfect lies."
Suddenly...
Every monitor in the laboratory flashed red.
SYSTEM OVERRIDE
ACCESS GRANTED
Dr. Harper's face turned white.
"No..."
Daniel slowly pulled a small remote from his pocket.
"I've waited twenty-six years for this moment."
He pressed the button.
Every locked door in the laboratory opened at once.
Hundreds of children stepped out into the hallways.
Some were crying.
Some looked terrified.
Some had clearly spent years underground.
Emma covered her mouth.
"My God..."
Daniel looked at everyone with calm satisfaction.
"They deserve to know the truth."
Police officers rushed inside, rescuing child after child.
Parents from across the country would soon discover that the children they had mourned for years...
Were still alive.
But then Noah's tiny voice echoed through the laboratory speakers.
"Mom..."
Emma looked around desperately.
"Noah! Where are you?"
"I found something..."
His frightened voice trembled.
"I found another room."
"It has lots of pictures..."
"...of you."
Emma's heart stopped.
"What pictures?"
Silence.
Then Noah whispered,
"They're all from the future."
The largest monitor in the laboratory suddenly switched on.
It displayed a security video dated...
TEN YEARS FROM TODAY.
Emma appeared on the screen.
Older.
Her hair streaked with gray.
Standing alone beside a grave.
The camera zoomed in on the headstone.
It read:
DANIEL HARPER
1989–2036
Emma frowned.
"But..."
Daniel was standing right beside her.
Alive.
Smiling.
Then the future version of Emma looked directly into the camera...
As if she could see them.
She whispered only six chilling words.
"Don't let him fake it again."
The screen went black.
Daniel's smile slowly disappeared.
For the first time...
May you like
He looked genuinely terrified.
THE END... OR IS IT?
