CHAPTER 5 – The Child Who Was Never Supposed to Survive

The steel door shook violently as the officers rammed it from the inside.

Nothing.

It wouldn't move.

Emma stared at the blank screen of her phone, replaying Daniel's chilling words over and over.

"You're finally where I wanted you."

Then...

A tiny voice echoed through the darkness.

"Mommy..."

Emma's heart leaped.

"Noah!"

She followed the sound, but Detective Mason grabbed her arm.

"Wait."

He pointed his flashlight toward the floor.

Small footprints.

Not just one pair.

Dozens.

They led deeper into another hidden tunnel.

The team followed them until they reached a massive underground chamber no one knew existed.

The room looked like an abandoned classroom.

Tiny desks.

Children's drawings.

Birthday decorations still hanging from the ceiling.

Every wall was covered with photographs of babies.

Hundreds of them.

Under each picture was a name.

A birthdate.

And a single red stamp.

"FAILED."

Except one.

One photograph had a green stamp instead.

It was Noah.

Below his picture were the words:

"SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE."

Emma collapsed to her knees.

"What does that mean?"

Before anyone could answer, an old projector suddenly flickered to life.

Daniel appeared on the wall, smiling calmly as though he had been expecting them.

"If you're watching this," he said, "you've finally reached my sanctuary."

"I know what you're thinking."

"You believe I'm a monster."

He laughed softly.

"But monsters don't create families."

"They replace broken ones."

The projector switched to grainy security footage recorded twenty-six years earlier.

A little boy stood inside the burning Harper house.

It was Daniel.

But he wasn't alone.

Another child was trapped upstairs, screaming for help.

Daniel looked directly at him...

Then quietly closed the bedroom door.

He walked away.

Leaving the other boy to burn alive.

Emma covered her mouth in horror.

"No..."

The video froze.

Then zoomed in on the other child's face.

Detective Mason suddenly went pale.

His hands began to shake uncontrollably.

Because the little boy in the flames...

Was him.

"I..."

His voice cracked.

"I was supposed to die that night."

Everyone stared at him in disbelief.

Mason slowly whispered,

"My name was never Mason."

"My real name..."

"...is Michael Harper."

Silence swallowed the room.

Daniel hadn't murdered his entire family.

One child had escaped.

And after twenty-six years...

The two brothers were finally standing in the same house again.

Just then, every speaker hidden inside the chamber came alive.

Daniel's voice echoed from every direction.

"Welcome home, Michael."

"I've been waiting for my brother."

A hidden wall slowly slid open.

Beyond it stood Noah's crib.

Empty.

But hanging above it was a single handwritten note.

May you like

"Only one Harper will leave this house alive."
