Chapter 1: The Divorce He Thought He Wanted

Everyone in the glass-walled office thought it would be another routine divorce between two wealthy professionals.
No one expected both of them to leave in tears.
Emma Carter stood silently by the window overlooking Manhattan. Her trembling hands clutched a single envelope while her husband, Daniel, refused to look her in the eyes.
"I've already signed," he said coldly, sliding the divorce papers across the table. "Let's stop pretending this marriage still exists."
The words struck harder than any slap.
For seven years, Emma had loved Daniel through every success and every failure. She had supported his business when no investor believed in him. She had worked endless nights beside him while hiding the worsening pain in her own body.
Yet today...
He couldn't even spare her one final smile.
"I only have one question," Emma whispered.
Daniel sighed impatiently.
"What?"
"If I disappeared tomorrow... would you regret this?"
He laughed bitterly.
"People move on."
Those four words shattered what remained of her heart.
Without saying another sentence, Emma reached into her purse and placed another envelope beside the divorce papers.
"You should read this after I leave."
Daniel barely glanced at it.
"I don't care."
Emma nodded.
"I know."
She signed the papers with shaking fingers before quietly walking toward the elevator.
Not once did she look back.
As the doors slowly closed, a single tear rolled down her face.
She wasn't crying because she had lost her husband.
She was crying because Daniel had just divorced the only person who knew the truth about what was happening inside his own body.
