Chapter 5: The Last Promise

By the time Daniel reached the hospital, surgeons were already fighting to save Emma's life.
He wasn't allowed inside.
For the first time in years, the powerful CEO who could buy almost anything stood helplessly outside an operating room.
Every second felt like punishment.
Noah quietly walked over and slipped his tiny hand into Daniel's.
"Is Mommy going to die?"
Daniel couldn't answer.
His throat closed.
Instead, he hugged the little boy tighter than he had ever held anyone.
Hours later, the surgeon finally emerged.
His exhausted face said everything before he spoke.
"We removed the internal bleeding..."
Daniel took a desperate step forward.
"But?"
The doctor lowered his eyes.
"The cancer has spread much further than we expected."
Silence.
"There isn't much time."
Daniel felt the world disappear beneath his feet.
The doctor handed him a small envelope.
"Emma asked us to give you this only if she survived long enough to reach surgery."
With trembling hands, Daniel opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
"Daniel...
If you're reading this, then God has given me one more chance to tell you something I could never say while looking into your eyes.
I never hated you.
Even after the divorce... even after the loneliness... I still prayed every night that you would live a long life.
Noah deserves at least one parent.
Promise me you'll never let him believe he wasn't enough to make his father stay.
Because the truth is... I never told him you left.
I told him you were trying to become someone he could be proud of."
Daniel dropped to his knees.
For years, he had blamed Emma for everything.
Yet she had spent her final days protecting Noah from hating his own father.
At that moment, a nurse suddenly rushed into the hallway.
"Mr. Carter!"
Daniel looked up.

"She's awake..."
