Chapter 4: The Child He Never Knew Existed

Daniel drove like a madman to the address written in Emma’s file.

It led him to a small house outside the city.

There, on the porch, sat a little boy with Daniel’s eyes.

The boy looked up.

“Are you my dad?”

Daniel couldn’t breathe.

Before he could answer, an elderly woman stepped outside.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Daniel whispered, “Where is Emma?”

The woman’s face hardened.

“She trusted you once. You destroyed her.”

Daniel looked at the boy again.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“She tried. The night she found out she was pregnant, you were celebrating with another woman.”

Daniel stepped back like he’d been stabbed.

“That wasn’t—”

“She saw the photos, Daniel. She heard you tell your friends marriage was a business mistake.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

He remembered that night.

He had been drunk.

Careless.

Cruel.

The boy slowly walked toward him, holding a toy car.

“Mom said you were busy saving the world.”

Daniel dropped to his knees.

“No
 I was busy destroying mine.”

Then the elderly woman’s phone rang.

Her face turned pale.

She looked at Daniel and whispered,

“It’s the hospital.”

Daniel stood instantly.

“What happened?”

The woman’s lips trembled.

“They found Emma.”

Daniel’s heart pounded.

“Where?”

The woman began to cry.
