Chapter 7: The Funeral… And the Woman in the Red Coat

The flat tone of the heart monitor echoed through the hospital room.
Daniel screamed her name.
"Emma! Please... don't leave me!"
Doctors rushed in.
Nurses pushed Daniel and Noah outside as the doors slammed shut.
For twenty agonizing minutes, neither of them spoke.
Finally...
The lead physician walked out, his face solemn.
"I'm sorry."
Daniel collapsed.
Noah buried his face against Daniel's chest, sobbing uncontrollably.
Three days later...
Hundreds of people gathered for Emma Carter's funeral.
Former coworkers.
Neighbors.
Doctors.
Even strangers whose medical bills she had secretly paid.
Daniel stood beside the casket, unable to stop staring at the woman he had loved too late.
As the minister prepared to end the service...
The massive wooden doors suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A tall woman wearing a bright red coat walked slowly down the aisle.
No one recognized her.
She stopped directly in front of Emma's casket.
Then she looked at Daniel.
"Are you Daniel Carter?"
"...Yes."
Without another word, she handed him a sealed envelope stamped with the logo of a prestigious law firm.
"Emma asked me to deliver this only after her funeral."
The woman disappeared before anyone could stop her.
Daniel's hands trembled as he opened the envelope.
Inside was a single key.
A bank vault number.
And one handwritten sentence.
"The greatest secret of my life was never in this coffin."

At the bottom was another line that made Daniel's blood run cold.
"Someone has been watching Noah since the day I adopted him."
