CHAPTER 2: The Secret Hidden for Thirty Years

Mark grabbed a utility knife and carefully sliced the mattress from top to bottom.
Foam exploded everywhere.
Rex watched silently.
Then...
A heavy metal box slid out onto the snow.
It was completely sealed, covered in rust, and locked with the exact key Rex had discovered only moments earlier.
Mark's hands trembled.
He inserted the key.
Click.
The lid slowly opened.
Inside were stacks of old photographs...
Property deeds...
Bundles of cash wrapped in plastic...
And one yellow envelope with his grandfather's handwriting.
"To the first person who trusted Rex enough to follow him..."
Mark stared in disbelief.
His grandfather had died ten years earlier.
How could he have known?
He unfolded the letter.
"If you're reading this, it means everyone else ignored the only family member who never lies."
The letter explained everything.
Years earlier, Mark's grandfather had uncovered a massive fraud committed by his own relatives. Afraid the documents would be destroyed, he hid the evidence in the last place no thief would ever search—inside an old mattress destined for the dump.
Only one creature knew where it was.
Rex's father.
Before passing away, the old dog had spent years sleeping beside that mattress, memorizing its scent. Somehow, Rex had inherited the instinct to protect it.
The documents exposed millions of dollars in stolen family assets.
Within weeks, investigators reopened the case.
Several relatives were arrested.
The hidden money legally belonged to Mark.
Reporters later asked him how he had discovered the truth.
He smiled, looked at Rex, and answered only one sentence:
"I didn't find the treasure... my best friend refused to let me throw it away."
