CHAPTER 3: The Relatives Who Came Back Too Late

Three days after Mark opened the metal box, his phone would not stop ringing.

Aunt Linda called first.

Then Uncle Peter.

Then two cousins who had not spoken to him since the funeral.

Everyone suddenly cared about him.

Everyone suddenly wanted to visit.

But Mark knew the truth.

They didn't miss him.

They were afraid.

That evening, a black SUV stopped outside the farmhouse. Uncle Peter stepped out in an expensive coat, smiling like nothing had happened.

"Mark," he said warmly, "we heard you found something in the house."

Rex stood beside Mark and growled.

Peter's smile disappeared for one second.

Then he laughed nervously.

"Control your dog."

Mark folded his arms.

"Funny. Grandpa said the same thing about you in his letter."

Peter's face turned pale.

Behind him, Aunt Linda whispered, "What letter?"

Mark pulled out a copy of the documents.

"Grandpa knew everything. The fake signatures. The stolen land. The bank accounts. All of it."

Nobody spoke.

The snow fell quietly around them.

Then Peter stepped closer and lowered his voice.

"Listen carefully, boy. That box doesn't belong to you."

Rex barked so violently that Peter stumbled back.

Mark smiled coldly.

"You're wrong. It belonged to the only man in this family who wasn't a thief."

The next morning, police cars arrived.

One by one, the relatives who had spent years pretending to be innocent were taken away.

But the biggest shock came later.

Inside the final envelope was one last deed.

Not for money.

Not for land.

For the entire farmhouse.

Grandpa had left it to Rex.

And Mark was named the legal caretaker.

Everyone laughed when an old dog guarded a dirty mattress.

But in the end...

That dog became richer than the people who tried to steal everything.
