CHAPTER 6: The Name Hidden in the Safe

The envelope trembled in Mark's hands.

"The real mastermind is still alive."

No signature.

No fingerprints.

Only one more clue written beneath the warning.

"Look inside the grandfather clock."

Without wasting another second, Mark, his father, and Rex rushed back to the farmhouse.

In the living room stood the massive oak grandfather clock that had chimed every hour since Mark was a child. His grandfather had always forbidden anyone from moving it.

Now he finally understood why.

Mark pulled the clock away from the wall.

Behind it was a hidden steel safe.

The rusty key from the mattress didn't fit.

But his father quietly reached into his wallet and pulled out another key.

"I've carried this for twenty years," he whispered.

Click.

The safe slowly opened.

Inside were several passports under different names...

Millions of dollars in offshore account records...

A hard drive...

And one thick red folder labeled:

PROJECT PHOENIX

As investigators examined the files, the room fell silent.

"This isn't just family fraud," one FBI agent muttered.

"It's an international money-laundering operation."

The documents revealed that Peter and Linda had never been in charge.

They were only middlemen.

The real leader had spent decades hiding behind fake companies, bribing officials, and erasing anyone who threatened to expose the organization.

Then Mark reached the final page.

A photograph slipped onto the floor.

His father froze.

"No..."

It was a family picture taken thirty-five years earlier.

Standing beside Grandpa...

Beside Peter...

Beside Linda...

Was someone Mark had known his entire life.

Sheriff Daniel Brooks.

The man who had investigated Grandpa's death.

The same man who comforted Mark at his father's funeral.

The same man who had promised to protect the Dawson family.

He had been there from the very beginning.

At that exact moment...

A police siren echoed outside.

Mark looked through the window.

Sheriff Brooks stepped out of his patrol car wearing a calm smile.

"I heard there was another break-in," he called.

He had no idea the safe had already revealed his face.

Rex stood in front of the door, teeth bared.

For the first time, the sheriff's smile disappeared.

Because he realized...

The family secret he had buried for three decades...

Had finally come back to destroy him.
