CHAPTER 4: The Recording That Destroyed the Family

Just when Mark believed the nightmare was finally over, an investigator knocked on his door carrying a dusty cassette player.

"We found this hidden inside the farmhouse wall."

The label read:

"Play only after the arrests begin."

Mark's hands trembled as he pressed the play button.

Static filled the room.

Then...

His grandfather's calm voice echoed through the speakers.

"If you're hearing this, they finally got greedy enough to expose themselves."

Mark felt chills run down his spine.

The recording wasn't just a goodbye.

It was a confession.

Thirty years earlier, Grandpa had secretly recorded a family meeting after discovering that Peter and Linda planned to forge documents, steal farmland from elderly neighbors, and frame him if he ever spoke out.

Every lie...

Every threat...

Every illegal deal...

Had been captured on tape.

Even worse...

One voice shocked Mark more than all the others.

His own father.

The man Mark had believed died an honest man.

He wasn't trying to stop the crime.

He was helping plan it.

Mark froze.

"No..."

Tears rolled down his face as he replayed the recording again and again, hoping he had heard wrong.

But the voice never changed.

The father he had admired his entire life had betrayed his own family for money.

The investigators exchanged silent glances.

"This recording changes everything," one detective said quietly.

"It proves the conspiracy started decades earlier."

Within hours, the audio leaked to the media.

News stations across the country played the recording nonstop.

The Dawson family name became a national symbol of greed and betrayal.

But late that night...

As reporters crowded outside the farmhouse...

Rex suddenly ran toward the old barn, barking louder than ever before.

Mark grabbed a flashlight and followed.

Behind a pile of broken wooden crates...

He noticed fresh footprints in the snow.

Someone had been hiding there.

Someone who had listened to every word.

Then the barn door slowly creaked open...

And a familiar voice whispered from the darkness:

"You should have burned that mattress."

Mark's blood ran cold.

May you like

Because the man standing in front of him...

Was supposed to have died twenty years ago.
