CHAPTER 5: The Man Who Returned From the Dead

he lantern in Mark's hand slipped to the floor.
The old barn echoed with silence.
Standing in the doorway was a man with gray hair, a scar across his left cheek, and eyes Mark recognized instantly.
"Dad...?"
The word barely escaped his lips.
Twenty years ago, the entire town attended his father's funeral. Mark remembered crying beside the closed casket. He remembered his grandfather holding him while everyone said goodbye.
Yet here he was.
Alive.
The man slowly stepped into the light.
"I never wanted you to find me," he whispered.
Rex didn't bark.
Instead, the German Shepherd stood perfectly still, staring at the stranger before quietly walking toward him.
The man knelt down.
Rex gently licked his hand.
Mark's heart nearly stopped.
"You... know my dog?"
The stranger smiled sadly.
"I knew his father."
Everything suddenly felt unreal.
The man explained that twenty years earlier, Peter and Linda had discovered he planned to expose their crimes. They offered him two choices:
Disappear forever...
Or let his young son grow up believing his father died a hero.
To protect Mark, he staged his own death with the help of a corrupt funeral director. Only Grandpa knew the truth.
"I watched you from a distance every birthday," he admitted, tears filling his eyes. "Your grandfather sent me photos. I wanted to come home a thousand times... but if I did, they would have killed us both."
Mark's anger exploded.
"You let me cry for you! You let me believe I buried my own father!"
"I know."
"I hated myself for years because I thought I hadn't told you I loved you enough!"
The man lowered his head.
"I've already punished myself every single day."
Before Mark could answer...
A gunshot shattered the silence.
BANG!
The bullet struck the wooden beam inches above Mark's head.
Rex lunged forward, barking furiously.
Hidden outside the barn, a masked shooter fired again before disappearing into the forest.
As Mark helped his father to his feet, they noticed something terrifying lying in the snow where the shooter had been standing.
Another envelope.
This one had only six handwritten words.
"The real mastermind is still alive."
Mark stared at the message.
He had believed Peter and Linda were the villains.
He had believed the investigation was over.
But now he understood the horrifying truth.
They had only exposed the pawns.
