CHAPTER 7: The Sheriff’s Final Mistake

Sheriff Daniel Brooks stepped onto the porch with the same calm smile he had worn for thirty years.
"Mark," he called. "I heard there was trouble. Mind if I come in?"
Mark opened the front door just enough to look him in the eyes.
"No."
The sheriff frowned.
"I've protected this family for decades."
Mark slowly lifted the old photograph from the safe.
"You mean you've controlled it."
For the first time in thirty years...
Daniel Brooks looked afraid.
Before he could react, two FBI agents walked out from behind the hallway.
"We've been waiting for you, Sheriff."
The sheriff instantly reached for his pistol.
But Rex was faster.
The German Shepherd launched forward, knocking the weapon from his hand before Brooks could even pull the trigger.
The gun slid across the wooden floor.
FBI agents tackled him to the ground.
As they snapped the handcuffs shut, Brooks suddenly laughed.
Not the laugh of a defeated man.
The laugh of someone who still believed he had already won.
"You think arresting me ends this?" he sneered.
"You still don't know what happened to your grandfather."
Mark's heart skipped a beat.
"What are you talking about?"
Brooks leaned closer.
"Your grandfather didn't die from a heart attack."
Silence filled the room.
"He was poisoned."
Mark felt the world spin beneath him.
"No..."
"I watched him collapse. I stood right beside him. And before he died..."
The sheriff smiled coldly.
"He whispered one sentence."
Brooks repeated Grandpa's final words slowly.
"The evidence isn't in the house..."
"...It's buried with me."
Everyone froze.
Even the FBI agents exchanged stunned looks.
If Grandpa had hidden another piece of evidence inside his own coffin...
Then everything they had uncovered so far was only half the truth.
That night, with a court order finally approved, investigators arrived at the old cemetery.
Floodlights illuminated Grandpa's grave.
Rain poured from the sky as the coffin was carefully lifted from the earth.
Mark stood beside Rex, barely able to breathe.
The lid creaked open.
Inside lay Grandpa's remains...
Exactly as expected.
But beneath the coffin lining...
There was a hidden steel compartment.
The lead investigator slowly pulled it open.
Inside rested a single black notebook...
And one sealed envelope addressed to Mark.
Written across the front were seven chilling words:
"Never trust the man beside you tonight."
Mark's blood ran cold.
He looked around at everyone standing in the rain.
The FBI agents.
His father.
The forensic team.
No one spoke.
Then...
Someone quietly switched off the floodlights.
May you like
The cemetery was swallowed by darkness.
And a single gunshot echoed through the night.
