Chapter 1 - THE VENOM IN THE VAULT

The quiet inside the study was no longer peaceful; it was oppressive. Luca Costello sat behind his heavy mahogany desk, staring at the two open envelopes resting on the polished wood. For twelve years, he had believed his body was a broken cage, damaged beyond repair by an unpreventable neurological disaster. Now, the toxicological breakdown from Johns Hopkins lay beside the DNA paternity match, transforming his entire past into a battlefield of deliberate lies.

He called for Arthur, his chief of security and the only man on the compound whose loyalty had remained unquestioned since the days before the collapse. When Arthur entered, his eyes immediately fell on the sealed reports.

"Lock down the main gate," Luca ordered, his voice low, vibrating with a cold intensity Arthur hadn't heard in over a decade. "No one leaves the compound. Bring me every medical file, every IV drip record, and every prescription log from Dr. Thorne’s office over the last five years."

"Is something wrong, boss?" Arthur asked, sensing the seismic shift in the room.

"Dr. Thorne hasn't been treating me," Luca replied, holding up the toxicology report. "He has been administering a synthetic neurotoxin designed to mimic degenerative paralysis. Every injection, every pill I was given to 'manage my condition' was keeping my nervous system suppressed."

Arthur’s face turned pale. "Thorne? But Marcus hired him..."

The name hung in the air like a blade. Marcus Sterling was Luca’s second-in-command, the man who had seamlessly stepped in to handle the syndicate's street operations and financial assets while Luca was confined to his seat. If Thorne was the hand holding the poison, Marcus was the brain guiding it.

Outside the window, on the back lawn, little Maya was holding Tommy’s hand, pointing toward the old backstop of the baseball diamond. She was laughing, her bright voice cutting through the thick silence of the estate. Luca looked at her—his daughter, flesh and blood—living in the maid’s quarters just a few hundred yards away, blissfully unaware that her presence had just ignited a war.

"Say nothing to Marcus yet," Luca said, turning his chair back toward Arthur. "He thinks I am a harmless ghost sitting on a throne of old money. Let him keep thinking that until I have every thread of his betrayal wrapped around his neck."
