Chapter 18 - THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT

Luca watched her closely, his pulse steady despite the staggering confession hanging in the air. "So instead of killing me, you poisoned me."
"I saved your life," Elena corrected softly, her voice filled with undeniable conviction. "If I had refused the contract, my father would have sent a strike team to slaughter you and everyone in your compound. So I proposed an alternative to the Iron Syndicate council: paralyze Luca Costello. Neutralize his threat without making him a martyr. Leave him alive as a powerless figurehead so his captains would fight amongst themselves and destroy the Chicago syndicate from within."
"And the twelve years?" Luca asked, his voice low and dangerous. "The twelve years I sat in that chair, watching my life rot away?"
"The neurotoxin was real, but I controlled the dosage through Thorne," Elena confessed, looking him directly in the eyes. "I kept you alive. I kept you safe while I systematically mapped out the entire global network of traitors—Marcus, Senator Vance, my half-brother Nikolai. I spent twelve years building the exact evidentiary ledger needed to destroy every single one of them in a single night."
"And Maya?" Luca’s voice cracked slightly, the emotion breaking through his icy exterior. "Was she just an asset in your operation?"
May you like
Elena stood up, stepping around the desk until she was standing inches from him. Tears glistened in her eyes, genuine and deep.
"Maya was the only unscripted miracle in my entire life," Elena whispered. "She wasn't supposed to happen. But when she was born, I knew I couldn't let her grow up in the shadows of assassins. I needed you to wake up, Luca. I needed the most dangerous man in Chicago to stand up and tear down the monsters who would have hunted my daughter forever."
