Chapter 10 - THE UNTOUCHABLE LEGACY

The final piece of the puzzle slammed into place with horrific clarity.

Tommy hadn't wandered through the hedge by accident. He had been sent as a child plant—a innocent-looking surveillance asset deployed by Senator Vance to monitor Luca's compound from the inside once Vance suspected Luca was beginning to show signs of physical recovery. Maya’s accidental discovery of the hedge gap had simply accelerated Vance’s timeline.

"My grandfather sent me to make sure you never stood up again," Tommy said, standing in the rain, looking at Luca with a mixture of regret and cold duty. "He told me you were a monster who killed people. But... you weren't a monster to Maya. You built a baseball field for kids you didn't even know."

Tommy looked down at the transmitter in his hand, his young fingers trembling.

"He told me to press this button if you ever walked," Tommy whispered. "It signals his federal task force to raid this estate and execute everyone inside under the cover of a 'mafia bust.' They're five minutes away."

Luca slowly stood up from Marcus, leaving his former lieutenant groveling in the mud. He walked toward the young boy, stepping right up to him. He didn't draw his weapon. He knelt in the mud, bringing his eyes level with Tommy’s.

"You're nine years old, Tommy," Luca said softly. "You don't have to carry your grandfather's sins. You have a choice right now."

Tommy looked at the powerful mob boss kneeling before him, then looked toward the porch where Maya and Elena were standing, watching in fear.

"What choice?" Tommy asked, tears finally welling in his eyes.

"Choose to be a kid on a baseball field," Luca said. "Hand me the transmitter."

Tommy hesitated for three agonizing seconds as the distant wail of federal sirens began to echo through the tree line surrounding the estate. Then, with a heavy sob, he dropped the transmitter into Luca's hand.

Luca didn't crush it. Instead, he flipped open the back panel, pulled out the secondary micro-chip, and plugged it into his own encrypted phone. He hit speed-dial on a number he hadn't called in twelve years—the personal line of the Director of the FBI's Internal Affairs Division, a man whose life Luca had saved two decades ago.

"Director," Luca said calmly into the phone as the heavy armored vehicles breached the outer gates. "This is Luca Costello. I am holding the primary transmitter linking Senator Robert Vance to twelve years of treason, domestic terrorism, and syndicate racketeering. Send your internal affairs unit to the Reyes estate immediately. Let's finish this."

Three months later, the sun shone brightly over the compound.

Senator Vance was in federal custody, his political empire completely shattered by the overwhelming paper trail, audio recordings, and toxicological evidence provided by Luca. Marcus Sterling and the corrupt syndicate captains were facing life sentences in maximum-security prison.

The Chicago syndicate was no more. Luca had used his vast fortune to quietly dismantle the organization, liquidating its assets and establishing a multi-million-dollar charitable trust managed by Elena.

On the back lawn, the grass of the baseball diamond was freshly cut.

Luca stood near home plate, holding a wooden bat. He was wearing a simple t-shirt and jeans, walking with only a slight, barely noticeable limp.

"Pitch it real hard, Tommy!" Maya yelled from second base, adjusting her oversized baseball cap.

Tommy, now officially adopted into the household under a protected identity, wound up on the pitcher's mound and threw a soft pitch straight down the middle.

Luca swung, connecting with a loud, satisfying CRACK. The ball soared high into the clear blue sky, sailing far over the trimmed privet hedge where a little girl had walked through a gap three months ago.

Elena sat on the porch steps, drinking warm tea, watching them with a bright, peaceful smile.

Luca watched the ball vanish into the sunlight, then turned to look at his daughter, who was laughing as she ran around the bases. His legs didn't hurt anymore. The silence was finally gone. He was no longer a king sitting on a throne of blood; he was simply a father standing in his home.

THE TRUTH THEY TRIED TO BURY: THE POISON WAS NEVER MEANT FOR LUCA!
