CHAPTER 1 – The Phone Call That Stopped Time

Emma had answered thousands of phone calls in her life.
None of them sounded like this.
The old landline rang just after sunrise while she was packing lunch for her six-year-old son, Noah. Her husband, Daniel, had already left for another "business trip," kissing her forehead with the same practiced smile he wore every Monday.
She almost ignored the phone.
Almost.
"Hello?"
For a few seconds, there was only heavy breathing.
Then came her mother's trembling voice.
"Emma... don't trust Daniel."
The sentence hit her like ice water.
"What? Mom, what happened?"
On the other end, Margaret struggled to breathe.
"I... I found something. You need to come home. Right now."
Before Emma could ask another question, the line filled with static.
Then...
Silence.
The call disconnected.
Emma stared at the receiver, her hands shaking uncontrollably.
Her elderly mother had never sounded afraid before.
Not when Emma's father died.
Not when she fought cancer.
Not even when she lost everything during the recession.
But today...
She sounded terrified.
As Emma grabbed her car keys, another call came in.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A man's cold voice whispered only one sentence.
"If you visit your mother today... you'll regret it for the rest of your life."
Click.
The line went dead.
Emma froze.
Someone knew about the phone call.
Someone was watching.
Behind her, little Noah tugged gently at her shirt.
"Mom..."
His tiny voice cracked.
"Why is Dad's suitcase still under your bed if he left this morning?"
Emma's heart stopped.
Daniel never forgot his luggage.
Never.
With trembling hands, she pulled the suitcase from beneath the bed.
It was empty...
Except for a thick envelope.
Across the front, written in Daniel's handwriting, were four chilling words:
"OPEN ONLY IF I'M CAUGHT."
Emma slowly opened the envelope...
And the first photograph inside made her collapse onto the floor.
It wasn't another woman.
It was...
Her own mother.
May you like
Standing beside Daniel.
Holding hands.
