CHAPTER 9 – The Button That Changed Everything

Daniel smiled as his thumb hovered over the red button.
“You lose, Emma.”
Twenty armed men raised their rifles.
No one moved.
Victor Hale looked directly into Daniel’s eyes.
“You still think this vault belongs to me.”
Daniel laughed.
“Of course it does.”
Victor slowly shook his head.
“No.”
“It belongs to Emma.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Victor reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.
It was dated twenty-five years earlier.
Emma unfolded it.
At the top, in bold letters, were the words:
THE HALE FOUNDATION – FINAL TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP
Below it was a single name.
Emma Hale.
Victor smiled through the pain.
“The day you were born... I transferred everything to you.”
Daniel’s confidence disappeared.
“That’s impossible!”
“You owned nothing?”
Victor nodded.
“I made sure no one could force me to surrender it.”
“The only person who could ever activate the vault…”
“…was my daughter.”
Daniel looked at Emma with hatred.
“Then press the override!”
Emma slowly walked toward the vault’s control panel.
A screen lit up.
IDENTITY VERIFIED
WELCOME, EMMA HALE
Three options appeared:
RELEASE ALL FILES
PERMANENTLY DESTROY DATABASE
LOCK FOREVER
Daniel pointed his gun at Noah.
“You have five seconds.”
Emma’s heart shattered.
“Noah…”
The little boy stepped forward.
For the first time, he looked directly at Daniel.
“You're not my dad.”
The words echoed through the vault.
Daniel hesitated.
Just long enough.
BANG!
A single shot rang out.
Daniel’s shoulder exploded with blood.
Everyone turned.
The shooter wasn’t a police officer.
It was Detective Michael Carter.
Alive.
He stepped from the shadows with a tactical team behind him.
“Federal agents!”
“Drop your weapons!”
The armed men panicked.
Within seconds, the vault erupted into chaos.
Gunfire echoed through the underground chamber.
Daniel grabbed the remote…
…and slammed the red button.
Nothing happened.
He stared at it in disbelief.
Victor smiled.
“You really thought I'd leave a working detonator in your hands?”
Daniel looked down.
The remote displayed one word.
SIMULATION.
“It was fake…”
Victor nodded.
“I've been testing your greed from the beginning.”
Daniel let out a scream that echoed through the chamber as agents forced him to the ground in handcuffs.
But just before they dragged him away…
He looked at Emma and whispered one final sentence.
“You're still too late.”
Emma frowned.
“What does that mean?”
May you like
Daniel smiled.
“They're already inside your company.”
