CHAPTER 2 – The Secret Hidden for Twenty Years

Emma refused to believe her eyes.
"No..."
She whispered over and over.
"This has to be fake."
The photographs looked old—very old.
Her mother appeared at least twenty years younger.
Daniel looked barely out of college.
In every picture...
They were smiling together.
Laughing.
Traveling.
One photo showed them standing in front of a small chapel.
Another showed Daniel holding a newborn baby.
On the back of that picture, someone had written:
"Our little miracle."
Emma couldn't breathe.
Noah quietly picked up one of the photographs.
"Mom..."
"Who's the baby?"
She snatched it from his hands before he could look closer.
Her mind raced.
Daniel had always claimed he never met her mother until their wedding.
Her mother had sworn the same thing.
Someone had lied.
Or...
Both of them had.
Ignoring the threatening phone call, Emma drove to her mother's house.
But when she arrived...
The front door was wide open.
Furniture had been overturned.
Family pictures were smashed across the floor.
The house looked as if someone had searched every room.
"Mom!"
She ran through the hallway.
No answer.
Only the ticking of an old grandfather clock.
Then she heard a faint voice.
"Emma..."
Her mother was hiding inside the basement, bruised and trembling.
The moment Emma hugged her, Margaret burst into tears.
"I'm sorry..."
"I should have told you the truth years ago."
Emma pulled back.
"What truth?"
Margaret looked directly into her daughter's eyes.
Then spoke the sentence that destroyed Emma's entire life.
"Daniel didn't marry you by accident..."
"He married you because... he has been looking for something your father hid before he died."
Emma felt the room spin.
"What did Dad hide?"
Margaret slowly reached beneath an old wooden floorboard.
She removed a small rusted key...
Along with a faded birth certificate.
Emma unfolded the document.
The father's name wasn't blank.
It wasn't Daniel.
It wasn't the man who had raised her.
It belonged to a name she had never seen before.
A billionaire.
A man officially declared dead...
Twenty-eight years ago.
And just as Emma looked up in shock—
May you like
The basement lights suddenly went out.
Someone had locked the door from the outside.
