CHAPTER 3 – The Man Behind the Door

The basement went pitch-black.

Emma grabbed Noah and pulled him close.

“Mom…” Noah whispered, shaking. “Is Dad here?”

Nobody answered.

From the other side of the locked door came slow footsteps.

One step.

Then another.

Margaret covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face.

“He found us,” she whispered.

Emma’s blood turned cold.

“Who found us?”

Before Margaret could answer, a familiar voice came through the door.

“Emma… open the door, sweetheart.”

Daniel.

But his voice wasn’t warm anymore.

It was calm.

Too calm.

Emma stepped back.

“You lied to me,” she shouted. “You knew my mother before we married!”

A pause.

Then Daniel laughed softly.

“You really think this is about your mother?”

Emma’s hands tightened around the rusted key.

“What do you want?”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“What your father stole from my family.”

Margaret suddenly screamed.

“Don’t listen to him! Your father didn’t steal anything. He protected you!”

Silence fell.

Then Daniel slammed something against the door so hard the walls shook.

Noah cried out.

Emma looked at the birth certificate again.

The billionaire’s name printed on it was Victor Hale—a man whose death had made national headlines decades ago.

But Margaret finally revealed the truth.

Victor Hale wasn’t dead.

He had disappeared after discovering his business partner was planning to murder his newborn daughter and steal his empire.

That daughter…

Was Emma.

Daniel’s father had been the business partner.

And Daniel had married Emma to find the hidden key to Victor Hale’s fortune.

Emma stared at her mother, horrified.

“My whole marriage was a trap?”

Margaret sobbed.

“Yes.”

Then the basement door burst open.

Daniel stood at the top of the stairs, smiling like a stranger.

Beside him was another woman.

Young.

Beautiful.

May you like

Pregnant.

And wearing Emma’s wedding ring.
