Chapter 2 - CHASING A GHOST

HUNTED BY THE MAFIA: The Pregnant Fugitive Who Outsmarted New York's Deadliest CartelBy 5:30 AM, the cold Manhattan rain had turned into a blinding sleet. Roman sat in the back of a bulletproof SUV speeding toward Brooklyn. His empire was bleeding from the inside out.

Reports were flooding in from his caporegimes. The Vescari Atlantic shipping terminals in Newark and Baltimore had been locked down by federal agents before dawn. The "Baltimore acquisition" Roman thought he was chasing the night before had been a phantom—a series of coordinated fake emails and spoofed calls generated by a server Elena had hidden right inside their own home.

"She orchestrated the whole thing to get you out of the house for four hours," Bruno said, staring at his tablet from the front passenger seat. "It gave her enough time to execute the emergency deed transfer and board a private transport."

"She didn't do this alone," Roman muttered, staring out at the blurred city lights. "Elena is brilliant, but she doesn't know our encrypted routing codes. Someone gave them to her. Someone inside my inner circle."

"We're checking the logs now, boss. But there's something else. We tracked the vehicle that picked her up from the townhouse. It was a grey Mercedes van. It didn't go to an airport or a train station."

"Where did it go?"

"The docks," Bruno said, turning around to face him. "Pier 42. It belongs to the Lucianos."

The Enemy of My EnemyThe Lucianos were the longest-standing rivals of the Vescari family. A bitter turf war had ended three years ago only because Roman had negotiated a fragile peace treaty that gave them exclusive rights to the northern supply lines. If Elena had gone to them, it meant she hadn't just run to the feds—she had formed an alliance with the one family capable of protecting her from Roman’s wrath.

The SUV screeched to a halt outside an abandoned warehouse on Pier 42. Roman didn't wait for his guards to open his door. He stepped out into the freezing wind, his black overcoat billowing around him. Behind him, three more SUVs pulled up, a dozen heavily armed Vescari loyalists spilling out into the dark.

Roman kicked open the side door of the warehouse. The scent of saltwater, rust, and cheap cigars hit him instantly.

Inside, sitting at a wooden table beneath a single overhead bulb, was Dominic Luciano, the youngest son of the Luciano patriarch. He was pouring himself a glass of whiskey, completely unbothered by the armed men storming his property.

"Roman," Dominic said, raising his glass in a mock toast. "You're out early. I thought you'd be at home enjoying some leftover pie."

Roman walked up to the table, closed the distance in a split second, and grabbed Dominic by his silk tie, slamming his face hard against the wooden table. The whiskey glass shattered, spilling amber liquid across the floor. Roman’s men instantly drew their weapons, aiming at the Luciano guards hidden in the shadows of the rafters.

"Where is my wife, Dominic?" Roman growled, pressing a heavy silver ring against Dominic’s temple.

"I don't know what you're talking about!" Dominic choked out, his hands clawing at Roman’s grip.

"Don't lie to me. Her transport vehicle was tracked straight to this pier. If you've touched her, if you've laid a hand on my son, I will burn your family's legacy to the ground before the sun comes up."

"She... she was here, Roman!" Dominic gasped, his eyes wide with genuine fear. "But she didn't stay! She used us! She offered us your northern shipping routes in exchange for a clean boat and a crew that wouldn't ask questions. She left forty minutes ago!"

Roman tightened his grip. "Where is the boat going?"

"International waters," Dominic wheezed. "She’s heading for a container ship registered under a Panamanian flag. Roman, listen to me... she didn't just take your money. She took the Black Ledger. She has the names of every judge, every politician, and every cop you've paid off for the last fifteen years."

Roman released Dominic, who slumped back into his chair, coughing and gasping for air.

The betrayal ran deeper than Roman could have ever imagined. Elena hadn't just run to save herself or their child. She was systematically dismantling his entire life piece by piece.
