Chapter 5 - THE CONFRONTATION

THE FACEOFF: A Loaded Gun, a Pregnant Wife, and the Lie That Ruined a Billion-Dollar DynastyThe estate in Nova Scotia was a fortress of glass and steel built onto a cliffside overlooking the freezing Atlantic Ocean.

On a night when the waves slammed violently against the rocks below, the interior of the house was completely silent. Elena sat in a rocking chair in front of a roaring fireplace, her hands cradling her heavily swollen stomach. She was now thirty-six weeks pregnant. The due date was dangerously close.

The heavy oak doors of the living room burst open.

The two guards she had stationed outside fell backward onto the floor, unconscious and bleeding.

Through the doorway walked Roman Vescari. He was alone. His overcoat was soaked with rain and sea salt, his face pale and determined. He carried no visible weapon, but his presence filled the room like a suffocating cloud.

Elena didn't scream. She didn't even stand up. She simply stopped rocking, her eyes locking onto the man she had betrayed a month earlier.

"You look tired, Roman," she said softly, her voice steady despite the rapid pounding of her heart.

"You're hard to find, Elena," Roman replied, stepping into the warm light of the fire. He looked at her stomach, his expression softening for a fraction of a second before hardening into stone once more. "Did you really think Arthur could protect you from me?"

"Arthur is dead," Elena said quietly. "He died three days ago from a stroke. I’m alone, Roman. It's just me, the baby, and the choices I've made."

Roman stopped five feet away from her. He reached into his coat.

From the shadows behind the curtains, a red laser dot appeared on Roman’s chest. A sniper was stationed on the balcony outside.

"Tell your man to turn off the sight, Elena," Roman said without looking over his shoulder. "If I die tonight, my men have coordinates to release a virus that will wipe out every account holding the Mercer Trust funds. We will both be broke, and our son will grow up in a foster home."

Elena stared at him for a long moment, then gave a slight nod toward the window. The red dot disappeared.

The Final Truth"Why did you do it?" Roman asked, his voice cracking with a rare flash of raw, unfiltered emotion. "I gave you everything. This house, the wealth, a life where you never had to look over your shoulder. I loved you."

"You loved a possession, Roman!" Elena flared, finally standing up, her eyes flashing with anger. "You didn't build an empire for our son. You built it for your own ego! And you lied to me! You told me you had nothing to do with my father’s death. But I found the execution orders. You signed them the day after our wedding!"

Roman closed his eyes. The silence between them was deafening.

"Your father was going to sell us out to the Commission, Elena," Roman whispered, opening his eyes. "He was old, he was weak, and he was going to destroy both of our families to save his own skin. I did what I had to do to protect our future. I killed him so we could live."

"And now look at us," Elena said, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "Look at what your protection bought us. A house on a cliff, running from the law, pointing guns at each other while our son is about to be born into a world of hatred."

Suddenly, Elena gasped, her hand gripping the armrest of the rocking chair tightly. Her face went pale, and she collapsed back into the seat, her breathing turning shallow and ragged.

The cream dress she wore began to darken with fluid.

"Roman..." she whispered, her eyes wide with sudden terror. "The baby... it's time."
