Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING FROM CELL BLOCK C

PRISON BREACH: The Dangerous Letter That Proves the Mafia Boss is Still Pulling the StringsThe thick, bulletproof glass of the Otisville Maximum Security Penitentiary was smeared with a greasy film of sweat and old fingerprints. On one side sat Roman Vescari, clad in an orange jumpsuit that could not diminish the terrifying authority radiating from his posture. On the other side stood Bruno, holding a sleek, secure briefcase that looked entirely out of place in the visitation room.

Three years of incarceration had not broken Roman. If anything, it had distilled him. Stripped of the daily maintenance of a visible empire, his mind had become a cold, calculating machine operating at 100% capacity.

"She built the terminal expansion in Rotterdam," Bruno said, his voice dropping to a low whisper as the correctional officer walked past their booth. "Just like you laid out in the 2024 blueprints. The board voted unanimously. She didn't even have to threaten them."

Roman’s lips curved into a dangerous, thin smile. "Elena doesn't need to threaten them, Bruno. She has the purest leverage in the world—legitimate, clean, institutional capital. When a company is that clean, politicians line up to protect it. But what about the southern border? What about the Luciano remnants?"

Bruno's expression darkened. He leaned closer to the mesh speaker. "Dominic Luciano didn't disappear after the feds swept New York. He’s been hiding in the shadows of the shipping ports in Miami. He knows the Mercer Trust is entirely clean now, which means he knows it’s vulnerable to raw, old-school violence. He’s been contacting the old Vescari captains who felt abandoned when you handed the keys to your wife."

"They think she's a weak woman holding a giant pile of money," Roman murmured, his dark eyes flashing with a predatory light.

"Yes, sir. And there's something else. Special Agent Marcus Vance... he didn't get the promotion he wanted after your arrest. The Bureau blamed him for letting the Vescari fortune slip through their fingers into a legal trust. He’s obsessed, Roman. He’s spent the last thirty-six months looking for any flaw in Elena’s immunity paperwork. He’s sniffing around the boy's trust fund."

Roman’s fist clenched beneath the metal visitation table, the veins in his forearm bulging against the orange fabric. "Vance can hunt me until his lungs rot. But if he looks at my son, he becomes a target."

The Hidden MessageBefore the guard announced that visiting hours were over, Bruno slid a legal document against the glass partition. To the guards, it looked like a standard motion for an appeal. But to Roman, the spacing of the paragraphs, the specific legal jargon used in the footnotes, was a highly sophisticated cipher he and Bruno had developed a decade ago.

As Roman scanned the text, his heart skipped a beat.

The cipher read: Dominic Luciano has intercepted a shipment of your son's private medical records. He knows about the heart condition.

Roman’s breath hitched. His three-year-old son, Leo, had been born with a minor ventricular defect—a secret closely guarded by Elena and her private medical staff. If Dominic Luciano knew about it, it meant there was a leak inside the Mercer Global Logistics internal security team.

"Time’s up, Vescari," the guard barked, hitting the metal door with a heavy wooden baton.

Roman slowly stood up. He didn't look at Bruno. Instead, he stared directly into the security camera mounted in the corner of the room. He knew Agent Vance was likely watching the feed from a monitoring station in Washington.

"Tell my wife," Roman said, his voice carrying a freezing weight that caused the guard to pause, "that the garden needs to be weeded. Before the frost sets in."
