Chapter 9 - THE OUTLAW'S ESCAPE

THE GREAT ESCAPE: How the Most Guarded Man in America Walked Out of a Federal Prison in Broad DaylightThe transport van carrying Roman Vescari from the Otisville facility to a federal courthouse in Manhattan was escorted by four heavily armed SUVs. Special Agent Marcus Vance sat in the front passenger seat of the lead vehicle, a smug smile on his face. He had finally secured a grand jury subpoena to question Roman about a series of old offshore transactions that predated his immunity deal.
"He thinks he’s safe behind his wife's corporate lawyers," Vance muttered to his driver. "But we’ve got him now. Once I tie those old accounts to the Luciano cartel, the entire Mercer Trust collapses."
Suddenly, the lead SUV’s dashboard navigation screen began to glitch, flashing bright green before going completely black.
BOOM.
A massive, coordinated electromagnetic pulse (EMP) device, hidden inside a parked delivery truck on the side of the highway, detonated. Instantly, every electronic component within a three-block radius died. The engines of the federal SUVs sputtered and stalled, their power steering failing completely.
The transport van rolled to a chaotic halt in the middle of the highway bridge.
"Ambush!" Vance screamed, reaching for his radio, but it was completely dead. Static filled the airwaves.
Before the federal agents could step out of their vehicles, three unmarked, heavy-duty armored tow trucks roared down the opposite lane. They didn't fire weapons; instead, they deployed rapid-release tear gas canisters that completely blanketed the bridge in thick, blinding white smoke.
The ExtractionInside the back of the transport van, Roman sat calmly as the smoke began to seep through the ventilation shafts. He didn't panic. He knew the precise timing of the strike. It was exactly 2:14 PM—the exact minute Bruno’s team had scheduled after calculating the shift changes on the bridge.
The heavy steel back doors of the van were suddenly struck by a massive hydraulic cutting tool. Within twelve seconds, the locks melted away, and the doors swung open.
Standing there was Bruno, wearing a full military-grade respirator mask and holding an extra tactical suit.
"We have exactly four minutes before the local police backup arrives on foot, boss," Bruno said, tossing the gear to Roman.
Roman rapidly stripped off the orange jumpsuit and slipped into the dark tactical gear. He stepped out onto the smoke-filled bridge, his eyes scanning the chaos. Through the haze, he saw Agent Marcus Vance stumbling out of his stalled SUV, coughing violently and trying to aim his sidearm blindly into the fog.
Roman walked up to Vance from behind. With a swift, brutal movement, Roman slammed the butt of his captured rifle into the back of Vance’s neck. The federal agent dropped to the asphalt, unconscious.

Roman picked up Vance’s dropped badge and tossed it into the river below.
"Let’s go," Roman said, stepping toward a high-powered speed boat waiting beneath the bridge structure on the water below. "My wife is waiting."
