Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW WAR

BLOODLINE WAR: When a Ruthless Kingpin Realizes His Unborn Son Is His Greatest EnemyThree weeks later. Location: An undisclosed, fortified compound in the wilderness of upstate New York.
The snow lay thick over the pine trees, isolating the estate from the rest of the world. Roman sat in a dimly lit study, surrounded by stacks of paper and glowing computer monitors. He looked thinner, his jawline sharper, his eyes hollowed out from a total lack of sleep.
He had lost his Manhattan townhouse, his public corporate titles, and more than half of his domestic assets. The FBI had frozen his primary American accounts, but Roman was a ghost in the financial world; he still possessed hidden networks of untraceable cryptocurrency and gold reserves buried beneath the radar.
"We found the container ship," Bruno announced, walking into the study and wiping snow from his boots. "The Marianna Prince. It docked in a private, heavily guarded port in Nova Scotia four days ago. Elena didn't stay on board. She was moved to a highly secured estate in the Canadian wilderness, funded by an anonymous shell corporation."
"Who owns the shell company?" Roman asked without looking up from his maps.
"It traces back to a name you know well," Bruno said, hesitating. "Arthur Mercer. Your late father-in-law's brother. The one everyone thought died in exile ten years ago."
Roman finally raised his head. A dark, cynical smile touched his lips. "Arthur. The old fox. He didn't die. He was just waiting for the right moment to reclaim his family's legacy. Elena didn't just run to save our son—she’s restarting the Mercer syndicate."
The AmbushBefore Bruno could reply, the lights in the compound flickered and died, plunging the room into absolute darkness.
The backup generators failed to kick in.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
The distant, silenced sound of automatic gunfire echoed from the perimeter of the estate.
"Ambush!" Bruno yelled, drawing his weapon and throwing himself in front of Roman as the heavy glass windows of the study shattered inward under a hail of bullets.
Roman didn't panic. He dropped behind his heavy mahogany desk, pulling a specialized tactical rifle from a hidden compartment beneath the floorboards. The crimson laser sights of tactical teams sliced through the darkness of the snowstorm outside, painting the walls of the room in deadly red dots.
"It's the Lucianos!" Bruno shouted over the gunfire, firing back through the broken window. "They must have tracked our location through the supply lines!"
"No," Roman said, chambering a round with a lethal click. "The Lucianos don't have this kind of tactical coordination. This is an elimination squad sent by the feds and paid for by Arthur Mercer. They don't want me alive to stand trial. They want the Vescari bloodline ended tonight."
Roman moved with lethal precision. He didn't fight like a boss who sat behind a desk; he fought like the soldier he used to be. He moved through the shadowed corridors of his compound, dropping three masked mercenaries with precise, cold-blooded headshots.
As the remaining attackers realized they had lost the element of surprise, they began to retreat into the blinding snowstorm. Roman stood at the edge of the shattered entryway, his coat stained with the blood of his enemies, looking out into the white abyss.
"They're getting desperate," Roman said to Bruno, who was bleeding from a graze on his shoulder. "Which means Elena is getting close to her due date. She wants me dead before our son is born so there's no one left to challenge the baby's claim to the combined Mercer-Vescari fortune."

"What do we do, boss?"
"We stop playing defense," Roman said, wiping a splash of blood from his cheek. "Get the cars. We're going to Canada."
