Chapter 8 - THE BLACK SHADOW OF MIAMI

THE SNAKE IN THE BOARDROOM: The Billion-Dollar Hostile Takeover That Began with a Threat to a ChildThe penthouse office of Mercer Global Logistics in Miami smelled of expensive jasmine and sea salt. Elena stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, watching the massive container ships slide into the harbor. She wore an immaculate white silk pantsuit, a stark contrast to the dark, stormy clouds rolling in from the Atlantic.
Her phone buzzed on the desk. It wasn't an internal line. It was an encrypted satellite call.
"Mrs. Vescari," a smooth, venomous voice said through the speaker. "I must compliment you on the third-quarter earnings report. A twelve percent increase in maritime freight logistics is impressive for a woman who used to just choose the wallpaper for Roman's houses."
Elena didn't hesitate. She recognized the low, raspy undertone immediately. "Dominic Luciano. I thought you were currently hiding in a hole in Caracas."
"Caracas is too hot, Elena," Dominic laughed dryly. "And besides, I missed New York. Or rather, I missed what New York used to be before your husband turned into a saint and handed his balls to the federal government in exchange for a clean name."
"If you're calling to ask for a seat on the board, the answer is no," Elena said, her voice like ice. "The Mercer family does not do business with men who handle street-level narcotics."
"Oh, I don't want a seat on the board, sweetie," Dominic hissed, his tone turning instantly vicious. "I want the entire southern distribution network. And you're going to hand it to me for the price of one dollar. Because if you don't, I’m going to release a very interesting medical file to the international maritime insurance syndicates. A file detailing your little boy’s congenital heart issue."
Elena’s hand froze on the edge of her desk. The room seemed to lose all its warmth. "You wouldn't dare."
"Think about it, Elena," Dominic whispered. "If the insurance syndicates find out the sole heir to the Mercer Trust has a terminal genetic condition, your stock prices drop by thirty percent by tomorrow morning. The hostile takeover will happen within an hour. But more importantly... a little boy with a weak heart shouldn't be subjected to sudden, terrifying situations. Like, say, a fireworks display outside his bedroom window. Or a car ride with strangers."
The Mother’s WrathElena felt a cold, primal rage explode in her chest. She wasn't the fragile girl who had wept over her father’s death anymore. She had spent three years running a global empire. She had learned how to think like a Mercer, and more importantly, she had learned how to survive like a Vescari.
"If you touch my son, Dominic," Elena said, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper that sounded exactly like Roman’s at his worst, "there is no corner of this earth dark enough to hide you. I will spend every single dollar of this forty-billion-dollar empire to buy the soul of every man you've ever loved, and I will watch them tear you apart."
"You have twenty-four hours to sign the transfer papers, Elena," Dominic said, unaffected. "Happy anniversary."
The line went dead.

Elena slammed the phone down. She didn't cry. She spun around and looked at her chief of security, a former MI6 operative named Evelyn Vance—who ironically was the estranged sister of Agent Marcus Vance, hired by Elena specifically because of her deep, personal hatred for her brother's corrupt methods.
"Find out who leaked the medical records," Elena ordered, her eyes burning with a lethal fire. "And call Bruno. Tell him I need to speak to Roman. Tonight."
