Chapter 3 - THE GHOST CONTRACT

THE SPY IN HIS BED: The Twisted Secret Left in the Empty NurseryRoman returned to the Manhattan townhouse just as the first pale light of dawn began to break through the clouds. The federal agents hadn't arrived yet; Vance was giving him until the exact minute of sunrise to clear out, a twisted game of cat-and-mouse designed to maximize Roman's psychological torture.
"Search the house again," Roman ordered his remaining men. "Look for anything she might have left behind. Elena doesn't do anything without a reason. If she left the shoes, the clothes, and the jewelry, she was leaving a message."
Roman walked up to the third floor, his heavy footsteps echoing through the hollow corridors. He entered the nursery. The room was cold, the heater having been turned off. He looked at the unassembled crib against the wall.
He walked over to the shelf where the stuffed blue elephant sat. He picked it up. It felt heavier than a normal plush toy.
Roman flipped it over. A neat, surgical slit had been cut into the fabric of the elephant’s belly. Inside, instead of stuffing, there was a small, black USB drive and a folded piece of heavy cream paper—the exact stationery Elena used for her personal letters.
He unfolded the paper. Elena’s elegant, precise handwriting filled the page.
Roman,
If you are reading this, it means you have finally realized that 'Baltimore' was never a port city, but a code name for your own undoing.
You told me you were building an empire for our son. But I know what happens to sons born into the Vescari family. I watched my father die in a car that smelled of gasoline and burning rubber because of this life. I watched my mother fade away into a ghost because she was married to a man who looked at his family as assets and liabilities.
I loved you, Roman. God help me, I did. But I love our son more. I will not let him be the heir to a throne built on a mountain of skulls. By the time you read this, the world you spent twenty years building will be gone. The USB drive contains the original, unredacted files from your corporate account—the ones proving you authorized the hit on my father's loyalists six months ago.
Yes, Roman. I know. I’ve always known.
Don't look for us. If you come after me, the encryption on that drive breaks automatically, and every rival family in America will receive the offshore coordinates of your secret accounts. You will be left with nothing but a name that everyone is trying to kill.
Goodbye, my love.
The Breaking PointRoman stood motionless in the center of the room. The revelation hit him like a physical blow. Elena hadn't run away because of an affair or because she was tired of his long hours. She had discovered the darkest secret he had buried—the fact that he had ordered the elimination of her father's old guard to consolidate his power within Vescari Atlantic Holdings.
"Boss," Bruno said, entering the nursery, his face pale. "The federal vehicles just turned onto the block. We have less than three minutes to get out through the underground tunnel."
Roman slowly slipped the letter into his pocket and gripped the USB drive tightly in his fist.
"Sir?" Bruno pressed, his voice urgent. "We need to move. Now."
"Let them have the house," Roman said, his eyes darkening with a cold, terrifying resolve. "They think they've caught me in a corner. They think Elena outsmarted me."
He turned to look at Bruno. "She thinks she bought her freedom with my money. But she forgot one thing."
May you like
"What's that, boss?"
"I didn't inherit this empire, Bruno. I built it from the dirt. And I can build it again."
