Chapter 5 - Darkness in the EstateThe sudden plunge into absolute darkness hit the grand ballroom first.

Declan could hear the muffled, collective gasp of two hundred elite guests through the thick oak walls of the passage. The string quartet stopped mid-note. Shouts of confusion echoed across the polished marble floors as the emergency backup generators sputtered and failed to kick in.

Inside the hidden passage, Declan and Nora moved in absolute, silent synchronization.

“The power grid is locked,” Nora whispered, her voice barely audible over the faint hum of the server banks hidden beneath the floorboards. “Liam’s men in the library are scrambling for tactical flashlights right now. We have roughly sixty seconds before they realize the control panel has been hijacked.”

“Lead the way,” Declan muttered, stepping into the vertical ventilation shaft.

The climb was steep, dusty, and narrow, but Declan’s athletic build—harnessed from years of underground boxing circuits before he took over the syndicate—carried him upward with ruthless efficiency. Nora moved ahead of him like a shadow, her boots making virtually no sound against the metal rungs.

They reached the top landing within three minutes.

The back of the ventilation grate opened directly behind the heavy mahogany bookshelves of the private study. Through the rusted iron slats, Declan could see Liam Foley pacing nervously across the Persian rug, his eyes darting toward the digital clock on the mantelpiece.

11:51 PM.

“Damn it,” Liam muttered to himself, pulling out his burner phone again. He dialed a number, his fingers tapping anxiously against the wood of the desk. “What do you mean the power’s out? Check the breaker box! No, don’t wait for Gallagher—just secure the perimeter and make sure the gas line is venting into the study!”

Declan watched his oldest friend through the grate, a muscle ticking violently in his jaw.

Ten years, Declan thought. Ten years of brotherhood, and he sells me out like a cheap cut of meat.

Nora reached past him, silently unlatching the rusted screws of the ventilation grate with a specialized multi-tool. She pulled the grate inward, placing it soundlessly onto the carpeted floor of the passage.

She turned to Declan, her eyes glinting in the pale moonlight filtering through the study’s high Gothic windows.

“Your turn, Mr. Gallagher,” she whispered.
