Chapter 6 - The Tiger UnleashedLiam Foley turned around, his phone still pressed to his ear, expecting the heavy oak study doors to open and reveal his hired cleanup crew.

Instead, the panel behind his desk clicked open.

“Liam,” a voice echoed through the dimly lit study—flat, cold, and dripping with an icy venom that froze the blood in Liam’s veins.

Liam dropped his phone. It hit the Persian rug with a dull thud.

He spun around, his hand instinctively diving beneath his tailored jacket toward his shoulder holster. But before his fingers could even graze the grip of his pistol, a heavy steel barrel was pressed firmly against the center of his forehead.

Declan stepped out of the shadows of the hidden passageway, his tuxedo jacket discarded, his shirtsleeves rolled up to reveal scarred forearms, holding the MP5 with absolute, unwavering deadliness.

“Looking for me, old friend?” Declan asked softly.

Liam’s face drained of every ounce of color. His mouth opened, but no words came out. His eyes darted frantically toward the desk, toward the explosive pressure trigger hidden beneath the rug, and then back to Declan’s cold, unblinking eyes.

“D-Declan,” Liam stammered, forcing a weak, pathetic chuckle that sounded entirely hollow in the cavernous room. “Thank God. The power went out downstairs—some kind of electrical surge. I was just... I was checking the perimeter security for you—”

“You were checking the pressure trigger,” Declan interrupted smoothly, stepping closer until the barrel of the gun pressed deeper into Liam’s skin.

“Declan, listen to me, you don’t understand—”

“I understand perfectly, Liam,” Declan snarled, his voice suddenly exploding with a suppressed fury that shook the antique chandeliers. “You thought you could blow me to pieces, hand the keys of the Chicago syndicate to the Bellinis, and walk away clean. You thought Declan Gallagher was getting soft.”

Liam swallowed hard, sweat beading heavily on his forehead. He realized then, with terrifying clarity, that all the lies in the world wouldn’t save him now. His hand twitched toward his shoulder holster anyway.

It was a fatal mistake.

Before Liam’s fingers could clear his jacket, the butt of Declan’s weapon smashed across his jaw with bone-crunching force. Liam screamed, stumbling backward and crashing hard against the mahogany desk, knocking over the crystal decanter of scotch. Amber liquid spilled in a jagged torrent across the wood, mixing with the dark blood pouring from Liam’s split lip.
