Chapter 10 - The Ultimate AuditKatherine stared at the screen, her forensic mind putting the final, terrifying puzzle pieces together in a fraction of a second.

Reginald was greedy, but he was sloppy. Hargrove had the bank access, but he lacked the architectural knowledge of Delaware shell loops. Someone else had to have designed the Bracken Ridge laundering system. Someone who knew exactly how the automated systems at First Meridian worked. Someone who knew exactly how to hide the pattern until they wanted it to be found.
“We had three people on it last week,” Marcus had said that first morning.
Marcus hadn't been helping her. Marcus had been using her.
He had set up the fraud with Reginald and Hargrove. But when Reginald got greedy and the feds started sniffing around municipal contracts, Marcus knew the ship was sinking. So, he subtly pushed the Bracken Ridge file to Katherine’s desk. He knew her meticulous mind would crack it. He used her to burn down Reginald and Hargrove, ensuring he walked away scot-free, ready to buy up Whitfield Development’s assets for pennies on the dollar through Bellwether Capital.
The light turned green. Marcus smiled at her. "Everything okay, Kath?"
"Everything is perfect, Marcus," she smiled back, her heart turning to ice.
They pulled into the underground parking of the bank. Marcus turned off the engine, looking triumphant. "We run the city now, Kath."
"No, Marcus," Katherine said softly, unlocking her phone. "I do."
She pressed a single button on her screen.
Marcus’s phone chimed immediately. He looked down. It was an alert from the bank's internal security system. Bellwether Capital: Assets Frozen. Federal Subpoena Issued.
Marcus’s face drained of color. He looked up at her, the mask of the friendly colleague completely gone, replaced by pure shock. "How long have you known?"
"Since you eagerly helped me hack the mainframe last night," Katherine lied smoothly, masking the fact that she had figured it out three minutes ago. "You thought you could use me as your weapon, Marcus. But you forgot the number one rule of compliance."
She opened the car door and stepped out into the cool air of the garage.
"What rule?" Marcus choked out, his hands shaking on the steering wheel.
May you like
Katherine leaned down, looking him dead in the eye with a predatory, victorious smile.
"Never leave a pattern for a woman who prefers the silence."
