Chapter 11 - The Checkmate in the Parking Garage

The concrete underground parking garage of First Meridian Bank was freezing, but the air inside Marcus Bell’s sedan felt like absolute zero.

Marcus stared at his phone screen, where the red alert from the bank’s central mainframe flashed relentlessly: Bellwether Capital: Account Access Terminated. Federal Subpoena Issued.

He looked up at Katherine, the mask of the affable, helpful colleague entirely stripped away. His eyes were wide, tinged with sheer panic.

"You didn't figure it out last night," Marcus rasped, his voice losing its smooth, casual cadence. "You only just put it together now."

Katherine stood upright, resting one hand casually on the open door frame of the car. She wore her sharp, tailored navy suit, her posture radiating absolute dominion. The silver threading in her dark hair caught the harsh fluorescent lights, looking like a crown earned through fire.

"I put the pieces together the moment you tried to gaslight me about who placed the Bracken Ridge file on my desk," Katherine said, her voice quiet, lethal, and entirely steady. "You thought Reginald was the golden goose, Marcus. But when Reginald got sloppy and the municipal audits started closing in, you needed a clean executioner."

"I gave you the tools!" Marcus yelled, slamming his hand against the steering wheel. "I gave you the career upgrade! Without me, you'd still be sitting at home baking cakes for a man who despised you!"

"And without you," Katherine replied coldly, "I wouldn't have learned how dirty the floors of this bank really are. You built Bellwether Capital using stolen municipal grants, using Hargrove as your puppet inside the regional office, and using Reginald as your corporate scapegoat. A brilliant scheme. Too bad you trusted a woman who reads ledgers for fun."

Marcus lunged for the door handle, his face twisted in fury. "You can't freeze Bellwether. The SEC authorization requires dual signatures—"

"I am the Senior Director of Compliance," Katherine interrupted, her voice ringing with absolute finality. "And as of forty seconds ago, I signed the emergency liquidation order. By the time the federal marshals finish with Reginald upstairs, they’ll be waiting at the elevators for you, Marcus."
