Chapter 8 - The Cornered RatKatherine returned to her empty house at noon. She was packing a single suitcase—she had bought a luxury condo downtown with her own money that morning—when she heard the front door shatter open.

"KATHERINE!"

Reginald bounded up the stairs, looking like a madman. His tie was ripped open, his eyes bloodshot, and he smelled of cheap whiskey and pure desperation.

"You ruined me!" he screamed, kicking her suitcase across the room. "The FBI just raided my office! Hargrove was arrested in the bank lobby! Fix it! Tell them you forged the data!"

He lunged forward, grabbing her by the arms. For ten years, Katherine would have shrunk away from his anger. She would have apologized to calm him down.

Not today.

She stared directly into his wild eyes, her expression utterly composed. "Take your hands off me, Reginald."

He shook her violently. "I built an empire! I gave you a perfect life! You are nothing without me!"

"You didn't build an empire," Katherine said, her voice dropping to a lethal calm. "You stole one. And you were so arrogant, so blinded by your own ego, that you had your wife—a forensic auditor—do your taxes every year. You handed me the murder weapon, Reggie, and then you handed me the motive."

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing rapidly louder. Red and blue lights began to flash through the bedroom windows, painting Reginald’s terrified face.

"Chloe took a plea deal an hour ago," Katherine whispered as Reginald backed away in horror. "She gave them everything."
